Welcome to the Department of Natural Sciences at Coppin State University. The Department is housed within the Gold LEED certified Science and Technology Center on Coppin’s campus and is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, greenhouse, outdoor gardens, vivarium, and technology empowered learning and collaboration spaces. Our biology labs have capabilities for tissue and cell culture, spectrophotometry, gel electrophoresis, Thermocyclers, and high-resolution microscopes. The department also has a research greenhouse for projects in the areas of environmental science and climate change. Chemistry research laboratories include the Center for Nanotechnology, Organic Syntheses Center as well as Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Computational Chemistry capabilities. These labs are equipped NMR, UV-VIS-IR spectrophotometers, fluorescence spectrophotometers, gas chromatography. A recent grant from Middendorf Foundation will expand research instrumentation in both our biology and chemistry labs.
The Department of Natural Sciences offers bachelor's degree programs in Biology and Chemistry with concentrations in Applied Sciences (Pre-medicine, Pre-Pharmacy and Pre-physician Assistant programs), Computation Chemistry and Biochemistry. New Graduate and Certificate programs are also in the making in areas of Applied Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and Polymer and Material Sciences. While exploring the links on this page, you will find that our faculty has a broad range of teaching and research interests. We are committed to providing students with instruction that is contemporary and infused with active learning strategies proven to be effective in achieving high learning outcomes.
Creating external partnerships is a strategic goal for our university. We build on our most valuable institutional strength: human capital. The Department is committed to community engagement and partnering with businesses, to meet workforce demands; preparing globally competent students; strengthening the economic development of Baltimore and the state of Maryland, at large.
We have strategically positioned ourselves to receive multiple research grants from federal and state agencies as well as corporate sponsored action research projects that support undergraduate research experiences on our campus. We are also writing grants to support Graduate Student Program Start-up Funding in the form of Recruitment Scholarships and Graduate Research Assistantships.
With Best Regards,
