President Candidate Bios

Kevin Carr CSUNAA 2025 Election

Why are you interested in serving as an officer on the CSUNAA executive board?

Serving as an officer on the CSUNAA executive board present a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of the alumni community. I am passionate about fostering connections among alumni, past and present, supporting current students, and enhancing the overall experience of our institution. By taking on this role, I can help drive initiatives that promote engagement, collaboration, and sharing of resources among alumni, ultimately strengthening our network . Additionally, I believe that my skills and experiences within the last 2 years can bring more valuable insights to the board, by helping to shape strategies that benefit all alumni and the institution as a whole

How can you support the alumni association to grow membership, help establish new alumni chapters, and increase alumni participation?

Supporting an alumni association to engage alumni, establish new chapters, and increase participation involves a combination of strategic planning, targeted communication, and community-building initiatives. Here are some ways to achieve those goals:

Create a Clear Alumni Engagement Strategy

  1. Understand Alumni Needs: Conduct surveys or focus groups to understand what alumni value and want from their association (networking, career services, events, social connections, etc.).
  2. Define Clear Objectives: Establish measurable goals such as increasing event participation, launching new chapters, or enhancing alumni communication channels.
  3. Segment Alumni: Group alumni by location, graduation year, career field, and other relevant criteria. This can help tailor engagement efforts and initiatives to specific alumni groups.
  4. Leverage Alumni Volunteers: Identify alumni willing to lead and organize activities in different regions. These volunteers can drive local engagement, build relationships, and foster a sense of ownership within the community.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Alumni engagement should not just be event-based—it should be continuous. Encouraging ongoing communication through newsletters, social media, webinars, and local meetups will help create a stronger sense of community and keep alumni actively engaged, even when they aren’t attending major events. By fostering a sense of shared ownership and community, the alumni association can become a hub of activity and support for both alumni and the institution as a whole. Engaging alumni is about offering meaningful ways for them to stay connected, contribute, and be proud of their alumni status. I am here to do just that.

Janel Harris

Why are you interested in serving as an officer on the CSUNAA executive board?

We are evidence of Coppin’s impact—her thumbprint on the world. I’m seeking the presidency of CSUNAA to lead with purpose, strategy, and unity. I believe our alumni association should be a powerhouse for connection, legacy-building, and support for our institution and each other. This role isn’t just about service—it’s about stewardship. I want to modernize how we engage, amplify alumni voices across generations, and build systems that foster meaningful involvement, giving, and mentorship. I’m committed to leading this work with transparency, care, and a bold vision for CSUNAA’s future.

How can you support the alumni association to grow membership, help establish new alumni chapters, and increase alumni participation?

My vision is to further engage alumni through communication strategies that reflect personal preferences and generational connections—whether through traditional outreach or digital platforms. This includes leveraging technology to modernize communication and using data to identify alumni priorities, map geographic distribution to inform chapter development, and offer meaningful benefits that inspire alumni to give back. I’m committed to honoring legacy voices while uplifting emerging leaders. With active participation, service, and love for Coppin, we won’t just reflect our past—we’ll define what’s next and leave no doubt about who we are and where we’re going.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

My campaign theme, Let’s Ruffle Some Feathers, is more than a slogan—it’s a mindset. It’s about having the courage to challenge the status quo, push for better, and move CSUNAA forward—together. It means honoring the legacy we inherited while making space for the future we deserve. I’m grateful for all Coppin has poured into me, and I carry that responsibility
with love and devotion. Her name is rising—and as alumni, we are part of that rise. This is a collaborative movement that demands clear vision, bold strategy, and a united alumni force ready to lead, build, and make it happen.

I am a former member of the board that is familiar with upholding the mission of representing my alma mater and staying connected to the alumni as well as fostering relationships with the current student body that will be future members of our association as well. Indeed, I hope to support the returning executive board that has been led by our current alumni president Kevin Carr who has my vote in remaining in that seat.

How can you support the alumni association to grow membership, help establish new alumni chapters, and increase alumni participation?

With the much needed help of our active alumni members (which includes our alumni executive board), our future alumni in our student body, and also our Coppin administration and staff, my desire is to continue to connect with communities throughout the DMV/Baltimore regions and to attract our constituents to contribute to efforts in recognizing why Coppin should also be in the same conversations when it comes to being one of the most popular HBCU’s in the nation. My desire also is to help create more on-campus events that will bridge relationships between the alumni and the student body on campus.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Yes, my desire is to continue to support Coppin throughout the communities that I become connected with, but I would really need the support of Coppin to respond so that our alumni can really be motivated and stay engaged to the great things that happen on and off campus.
