Coppin State University is committed to providing an educational environment in which pregnant and parenting students have equitable access to academic programs, activities, services, and opportunities.
Pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, lactation, and related medical conditions are protected under Title IX. The University also recognizes that students who are parents or caregivers may need information and support to successfully continue their education.
This Pregnant and Parenting Student Support Plan provides information about university accommodations, campus and community resources, health care services, childcare assistance, and government assistance programs available to pregnant and parenting students.
Pregnancy and Title IX Protections
Title IX prohibits discrimination based on sex, including discrimination based on pregnancy and related conditions. Coppin State University does not discriminate against a student because of pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, lactation, or related medical conditions.
Students who need assistance related to pregnancy or a related condition may contact the Office of Title IX Compliance to discuss their rights, available resources, and reasonable modifications.

Pregnancy-Related Modifications and Support
Reasonable modifications may be available based on a student's individual needs related to pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, lactation, or related medical conditions.
Depending on the circumstances, modifications may include:
- Excused absences when medically necessary;
- Opportunities to make up missed coursework;
- Changes in physical space or seating;
- Breaks during class to attend to pregnancy-related health needs;
- Breaks to express breast milk or breastfeed;
- Access to lactation spaces;
- Academic adjustments when appropriate;
- Temporary accessibility-related modifications;
- Changes to University dining arrangements when appropriate and reasonably available; and
- Other reasonable modifications based on the student's individual circumstances.
The appropriate modification will depend on the student's individual needs and the essential requirements of the academic program or activity. The Title IX Coordinator will work with the student and appropriate University offices to identify and coordinate reasonable modifications.

Lactation Support
Coppin State University supports students and employees who are breastfeeding or expressing breast milk. Students may request reasonable break time and access to a clean, private space, other than a bathroom, for expressing breast milk or breastfeeding as required by applicable law.

Housing Support
Pregnant and parenting students living in University housing who need assistance related to housing should contact the Office of Title IX Compliance and/or Residence Life and Housing. Government Assistance Programs
Pregnant and parenting students may qualify for federal, State, or local assistance. Eligibility requirements vary by program.
Maryland WIC provides nutrition assistance, healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health and social services for eligible pregnant individuals, postpartum individuals, infants, and children under age five.

The Maryland Child Care Scholarship Program provides financial assistance with child care costs to eligible Maryland families. Students attending school may qualify if they meet program eligibility requirements.

Maryland Medicaid provides health coverage to eligible Maryland residents, including eligible pregnant individuals, parents, children, and families.
Students can apply for Medicaid through Maryland Health Connection, a local health department, a local Department of Social Services office, or Maryland Benefits.

Coppin State University Child Development Center of Goodwill
The Coppin State University Child Development Center of Goodwill, located on campus next to the Henrietta Lacks Health and Human Services Building, provides Early Head Start services for eligible infants and toddlers approximately six weeks through three years of age. The Center offers early childhood education, developmental support, and family-centered resources. Pregnant and parenting students are encouraged to contact the Center early for information about eligibility, enrollment, and availability. Enrollment is subject to eligibility requirements and available space.

The Maryland Child Care Scholarship Program can assist eligible families with childcare costs. The program may be used with participating childcare providers.

The University maintains a referral network of community health care providers that may offer prenatal, postpartum, reproductive, pediatric, mental health, and other health-related services. Students seeking off-campus services may contact the Center for Counseling and Student Development or the Community Health Center for information and referrals to local providers.
Students are responsible for contacting off-campus providers directly to confirm available services, eligibility requirements, insurance coverage, costs, and appointment availability.
