Dr. F. Michelle Richardson Elected to COSMA Board of Commissioners

BALTIMORE — Dr. F. Michelle Richardson, Associate Professor of Sport Management in the College of Business, has been elected to serve on the Board of Commissioners (BOC) for the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). 

Dr. Richardson brings significant leadership experience to this role, having previously served on the COSMA Board of Directors from 2020 to 2026. Her continued service reflects a strong commitment to advancing quality assurance and excellence within sport management education. 

The COSMA Board of Commissioners comprises eight members selected from the COSMA membership and represents a broad cross-section of the sport management community. Board membership includes at least one individual representing minority-serving institutions, one individual representing the public, and one individual representing practitioners in the sport industry. The Board meets twice annually and independently determines the accreditation status of institutions’ sport management programs. 

COSMA is a specialized accrediting body whose mission is to promote and recognize excellence in sport management education worldwide. COSMA accredits sport management programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels in colleges and universities. Through its rigorous accreditation process, COSMA provides external verification of academic quality, benefiting programs, students, employers, and the public. Its developmental approach to accreditation also encourages continuous quality improvement and innovation in sport management education. 

As a member of the Board of Commissioners, Dr. Richardson will fulfill key responsibilities that include: 

  • Determining accreditation status for sport management programs 

  • Recommending changes to accreditation expectations and processes 

  • Re-evaluating accredited sport management programs as necessary 

  • Exercising other incidental powers required to carry out the functions of the Board of Commissioners 

Dr. Richardson’s election underscores her professional expertise, national service, and leadership within the field of sport management education. Her role on the COSMA Board further strengthens the College of Business’s engagement with national accreditation and commitment to academic excellence.
