Coppin State’s Student Success Strategies Featured in Higher Education Podcast
BALTIMORE — Coppin State University’s progress in raising first-to-second-year retention from 57% to approximately 75% is featured in a new episode of signals in higher ed.
Dr. James Stewart, associate vice president for Enrollment Services and co-divisional leader for enrollment management and student affairs, joins host Darin Francis to discuss the collaboration and coordinated support behind those gains.
“I think the work of retention is recruiting the students back every single semester,” Stewart said.
The conversation highlights the Eagle Achievement Center, which brought together 11 previously separate departments to connect students with advising, tutoring, career services and other resources. Stewart credits President Anthony L. Jenkins’ leadership and the “One Coppin” emphasis with building shared responsibility for student success.
Stewart also discusses introducing career readiness in students’ first semester and the importance of relationships with faculty, staff and peers in helping students stay enrolled.
“They’re staying because they find that community and sense of belonging,” he said.
