Coppin State University Celebrates Regional Emmy Nomination for Maryland Public Television Special

“Welcome to HBCU Week from Coppin” recognized among Maryland Public Television’s network-record 44 Emmy nominations 

BALTIMORE – Coppin State University is celebrating a regional Emmy nomination for Welcome to HBCU Week from Coppin, a Maryland Public Television special that highlighted the heritage, mission, and lasting impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities through the story of Coppin’s West Baltimore campus. 

Announced Wednesday, May 13, the program earned a nomination in Category #306: Public Affairs Program as part of Maryland Public Television’s network-record 44 nominations in this year’s regional Emmy competition — the most in the station’s history. 

The nomination recognizes hosts Tetiana Anderson and Bryant Brown, along with producers T.L. Benton, Travis Mitchell, and Trae Mitchell. 

Anchored at Coppin State University, the special spotlighted student voices, faculty perspectives, and the institution’s enduring role in shaping leaders, scholars, and changemakers, while positioning Coppin within the broader national conversation about the value and future of HBCUs. 

“Coppin welcomed us in and trusted us to tell its story honestly,” said Travis Mitchell, producer of Welcome to HBCU Week from Coppin. “The energy on that campus — from the students to President Jenkins to the alumni who showed up — is what made this program special. This nomination truly belongs to the Coppin community.” 

For Coppin State University, the recognition affirms both the strength of the institution’s story and the importance of media partners committed to elevating HBCUs and the communities they serve.

Our students, faculty, staff, and alumni saw themselves reflected on screen, and now the industry is seeing them, too.” 

Welcome to HBCU Week from Coppin was part of Maryland Public Television’s annual HBCU Week programming, which celebrates the legacy and modern-day relevance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities across Maryland and the nation.
