Coppin State Students Connect Learning, Leadership and Community Through BreadCoin Experience
Community Organization students gained firsthand experience with nonprofit leadership, community engagement and service in Baltimore.
BALTIMORE — Coppin State University students recently took their learning beyond the classroom through a shared-table experience with BreadCoin, gaining firsthand insight into how community-based organizations respond to local needs and build meaningful connections with the people they serve.
Students enrolled in the Community Organization course met with BreadCoin representatives to learn about the organization’s mission, approach to community engagement and role within the community.
The hands-on learning experience was organized by Tenyo Pearl, Ed.D., CNP, Faculty and Program Coordinator for the Nonprofit Leadership Program and Campus Director for the CSU Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. The experience was designed to help students connect academic concepts with practical examples of nonprofit and community-based work. The Nonprofit Leadership Program is part of the Department of Applied Social and Political Sciences within the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Coppin State University.
“Experiential learning gives students the opportunity to step outside of the classroom, explore the community and connect what they are learning to the work taking place around them,” Pearl said. “Experiences like this allow students to see the concepts we discuss in class in action while also gaining a deeper understanding of the organizations serving our communities.”
Students also explored the skills and perspectives that support effective community leadership, including relationship building, communication, problem-solving and responsiveness to community needs. By engaging directly with professionals in the field, they were able to ask questions, broaden their understanding of nonprofit work and consider how their academic preparation can translate into future careers and service.
The experience reflects Coppin State University’s commitment to the holistic development of its students. In addition to building academic knowledge, students are encouraged to strengthen their leadership skills, develop professionally, deepen their sense of civic responsibility and understand how their education can be used to make a meaningful impact.
For students preparing for careers in nonprofit leadership, public service, advocacy and other community-centered fields, opportunities like the BreadCoin experience provide valuable exposure to the people and organizations putting those principles into practice.
Through experiential learning and community engagement, Coppin students are preparing not only for their careers, but also to become thoughtful leaders and active contributors to the communities they serve.
