Biography

Dr. Carlin Dexter Nelson, PhD, MPH, CPH, CHES®, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Sciences within the College of Health Professions at Coppin State University. He teaches undergraduate courses in health behavior and promotion, health statistics, epidemiology, urban health, and contemporary issues in health sciences. His teaching approach emphasizes applied learning, data literacy, and critical thinking around health equity and population health.

Dr. Nelson’s research and scholarly interests focus on urban environmental health, social determinants of health, and health disparities, with particular attention to how structural and neighborhood-level factors influence physical and mental health outcomes in marginalized communities. He actively mentors undergraduate students in research projects that examine issues such as heat exposure, tree canopy inequities, energy burden, and access to health care.

Dr. Nelson is a Certified in Public Health (CPH) professional and a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®). Through his teaching, scholarship, and service, he is committed to advancing health equity, strengthening undergraduate research engagement, and preparing students for careers in public health and health-related fields.
