Building a Healthier Community: CSU and the Mid-Atlantic Black Farmers Conference

Coppin State University is more than a host, we are a proud partner in the Mid-Atlantic Black Farmers Conference. This year, we're focused on building a food system that serves everyone. The conference and its vibrant HBCU Farmers Market on campus are a perfect example of our commitment to community well-being and addressing health disparities. By connecting our students with farmers and advocates, we are helping to cultivate the next generation of leaders who understand the vital link between food, justice, and public health.

About the Conference

The Mid-Atlantic Black Farmers Conference is a three-day event dedicated to advancing Black-led agriculture in the region. Under the theme "Farming Forward," the conference highlights the resilience and cooperative economics of Black farmers while working to build a more equitable and just food system. The event brings together a diverse group of participants, including farmers, researchers, policymakers, chefs, students, and community leaders.

The conference is designed to be a comprehensive and immersive experience, with distinct events and activities each day.

Thursday, October 9 (Pre-Conference Day)

The conference kicks off with a special evening event that sets the tone for the entire gathering. Attendees can participate in a screening of the film Rhythms of the Land, followed by a plenary panel discussion. This panel is a critical component, as it focuses on the historical context and future of Black agrarian traditions, providing a foundation for the discussions that will take place over the following days.

Friday, October 10

This day is dedicated to hands-on experience and community engagement. The main events are:

HBCU Farmers Market: Held at Coppin State University, this producer-only market features Black farmers and food entrepreneurs from the Mid-Atlantic region. It serves as a vital hub for community access to fresh, healthy produce, and also includes cooking demonstrations, health screenings, and community workshops.

Baltimore Urban Farm Bus Tour: This tour provides a firsthand look at the innovative and resilient Black-led urban farms operating in Baltimore. It's a "living classroom" that showcases how urban agriculture can transform communities, create jobs, and foster food sovereignty.

Saturday, October 11

The final day is the core of the conference, packed with a full program of sessions and networking opportunities.

Full Conference Program: This includes keynotes from influential speakers, a variety of breakout sessions on topics relevant to Black farmers, and a comprehensive exhibitor hall where attendees can connect with resources and organizations. A policy plenary provides a forum for discussing the legislative and systemic changes needed to support Black agriculture.

Evening Awards Dinner & Celebration: The conference concludes with a celebratory dinner and awards ceremony. This event recognizes outstanding farmers and community leaders, honoring their contributions and providing a space for networking and celebration.

The conference is a platform for action, education, and networking, strengthening the collective voice of Black farmers and building a food system that is more just, resilient, and beneficial for everyone.
