Admissions & Dance Placement

No audition is required to be accepted to the Coppin State University and the Dance Program.  If you are accepted into Coppin State University, you must declare Dance as your major or minor.

In addition, to ensure proper placement in our program and technique classes, all incoming and transfer students are required to do a Placement Audition.

Placement Audition

The Dance Program will hold a two in-person auditions on November 14, 2026, or March 6, 2027, for prospective freshmen and transfer dance majors entering Coppin Dance in Spring 2027 or Fall 2027. To apply, complete the 2027 Dance Program High School & Transfer Student Open House & Placement form.

All auditioners must register for one audition date. No fees are associated. The audition is for class placements and is structured in a class format.

Upon your audition registration, a representative of the CSU Dance Program will contact you with information about the audition location and parking.

Recommended audition attire: form-fitting tops and bottoms (no jeans or sweats), no bare midriff, ballet shoes (no pointe shoes), socks, and bare feet. Bring a form-fitting long-sleeved top for possible floorwork.

Prospective students should apply for admission to Coppin State University prior to or after the placement class.

If you miss or cannot attend the scheduled auditions, you can submit a Dance Placement Video prior to enrolling at Coppin.

Dance Placement Video Guidelines

All incoming dance majors and minors must submit a placement video before the semester begins to ensure appropriate placement in technique classes. An audition is not required for acceptance into the program.

1. Format Your Video
   • Submit a piece (or excerpts) that best showcases your movement ability and style, such as Improv, Modern/Contemporary, Hip Hop, Tap, African, or Jazz.
   • Keep your video under 2 minutes.
   • Ensure your video is clear, well-lit, and shows your full body in motion.
   • If dancing in a group, clearly identify yourself (e.g., label or arrow).
2. Upload and Submit
   • Upload your video to an accessible platform (e.g., an Unlisted YouTube link, Google Drive, Vimeo).
   • Double-check that the video is viewable and that permissions are set to “anyone with the link.”
   • Then complete the Dance Placement Audition Form and paste your video link in the designated field.
