1098-T Overview
The 1098-T form is the Tuition Statement that Coppin uses to report qualified tuition and related education expenses to you and the IRS. You or your parent/guardian may be able to claim these expenses as education related tax credits. Based on your enrollment for that calendar year, you may have made or received tuition payments during the tax year and may qualify for a 1098-T Tax Statement.

All students are required to furnish the University with a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Tax Identification Number (TIN). Failure to properly furnish your name and tax identification number (social security number or individual tax identification number, as applicable) as required by U.S. tax law may subject you to a financial penalty. This information is needed so that the university may properly discharge its duty of filing completely and accurately the information return on IRS Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement, and providing such information in a statement to you to support any educational deductions or credits that may be claimed by you or on your behalf.
It is also your responsibility to keep your name and SSN/TIN information current. If a change in your circumstances, such as change in marriage status, requires update to your name, then you will need to update your social security records at the Social Security Administration (by completing SSA Form SS-5) or update your individual tax identification records at the IRS, whichever applies.
CSU cannot provide tax advice. For more information you should consult your professional tax preparer regarding educational credits and deductions.
In order to comply with IRS regulations, CSU will process 1098-T tax forms for the current tax year by January 31st. In compliance with University System of Maryland recommendations, CSU will not generate 1098-T forms after the deadline for any tax year.
