Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

MFA

What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security measure that requires users to verify their identity through two or more factors before accessing an account or system. These factors typically include:

  1. Something you know – Your password.
  2. Something you have – A device, such as your phone or a security token.
  3. Something you are – Biometric verification, such as a fingerprint or facial recognition.

MFA ensures that even if one factor (e.g., your password) is compromised, your account remains protected.

FAQs About MFA

Why is MFA Important?

MFA provides enhanced protection for your account and sensitive information by significantly reducing the risk of unauthorized access. Key benefits include:

  • Increased Security: Adds a second layer of protection beyond passwords.
  • Reduced Risk of Phishing: Even if someone steals your password, they can't access your account without the second factor.
  • Compliance with Best Practices: Meets modern cybersecurity standards for protecting sensitive data.
  • Flexibility: Supports a variety of authentication methods, making it convenient and accessible.

How Does MFA Work?

When MFA is enabled, logging into an account involves two steps:

  1. Enter your username and password as usual.
  2. Complete the second authentication step using one of the following methods:
    • A notification from an authentication app, such as Microsoft Authenticator.
    • A one-time code sent via SMS or email.
  3. Once authenticated, you'll gain access to your account.

Cyberattacks targeting universities are increasing every year. Stolen passwords are the most common way attackers gain access to accounts. MFA blocks over 99% of credential-based attacks and is one of the most effective security steps an institution can take. It also supports compliance with FERPA and other data protection standards.

MFA is being rolled out department by department to all Coppin State account holders — faculty, staff, and students.

Yes. MFA applies to any system that uses your Coppin State credentials, including Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint), Workday, EAGLELINKS, and other university platforms.
