Coppin State University offers a growing variety of training and development opportunities for all employees.     • Personal Development Training: Courses that focus on personal/professional wellness and financial planning. These courses are identified by the color green on the Schedule-At-A-Glance.

    • Required Training: Courses that are mandated by policy and legal compliance regulations for all employees. These courses do not require registration and are identified by the color blue on the Schedule-At-A-Glance.

Coppin State University is required by federal law, Executive Order 11246 and the Vietnam's Era Veterans Readjustment Act of 1974, to request and maintain summative data regarding the racial/ethnic, sex, and veteran status of applicants for employment.

Coppin State University’s affirmative action program contains a set of specific, result-oriented procedures to which the University commits itself and applies a good faith effort to attain. The purpose of such procedures is equal employment opportunity. As a recipient of federal funds, Coppin State University is required to comply with Title IX of the Higher Education Amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq. (“Title IX”), which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs or activities, admissions, and employment. Title IX states that:

Discrimination in the workplace is prohibited by the following laws:

  • Executive Order 01.01.01.16- Governor's Code on Fair Employment Practices
  • Article 49B of the Annotated Code of Maryland
  • Title 20, Human Relations, Subtitle 6- Discrimination in Employment Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin;
  • The Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA), which protects men and women who perform substantially equal work in the same establishment from sex-based wage discrimination;
  • The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), which protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older;
  • Title I and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended (ADA), which prohibit employment discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector, and in state and local governments;
  • Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination and requires employers with federal contracts or subcontracts that exceed $10,000 to take affirmative action to hire, retain, and promote qualified individuals with disabilities.
  • Title II of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA), which prohibits employment discrimination based on genetic information about an applicant, employee, or former employee;

It is illegal to discriminate in any aspect of employment, based on the aforementioned anti-discrimination laws, including but not limited to:

  • Hiring and firing;
  • Compensation, assignment, or classification of employees;
  • Transfer, promotion, layoff, or recall;
  • Job advertisements;
  • Recruitment;
  • Testing;
  • Use of company facilities;
  • Training and apprenticeship programs;
  • Fringe benefits;
  • Pay, retirement plans, and disability leave; or
  • Other terms and conditions of employment.

Discriminatory practices under these laws also include:

  • Harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, national origin, disability, genetic information or age;
  • Retaliation against an individual for filing a charge of discrimination, participating in an investigation, or opposing discriminatory practices;
  • Employment decisions based on stereotypes or assumptions about the abilities, traits, or performance of individuals of a certain sex, race, age, religion, or ethnic group, or individuals with disabilities, or based on myths or assumptions about an individual's genetic information; and
  • Denying employment opportunities to a person because of marriage to, or association with, an individual of a particular race, religion, national origin, or an individual with a disability. Title VII also prohibits discrimination because of participation in schools or places of worship associated with a particular racial, ethnic, or religious group.

In addition, employment decisions at the University are based solely on job-related criteria. All personnel actions or programs that affect qualified individuals with disabilities or covered veterans, such as employment, upgrading, demotion or transfer, recruitment, advertising, termination, rate of pay or other forms of compensation, and selection for training, will be made without discrimination based upon the individual's physical or mental disability or veterans' status.

The University makes, and will continue to make, reasonable accommodations to promote the employment of qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans, unless such accommodations would impose an undue hardship on the University's business.

The AAP includes an audit and reporting system, which, among other things, provides information for the purpose of measuring the effectiveness of the AAP. All managers and supervisors will take an active part in the University's AAP to ensure that all qualified employees with disabilities and covered veterans and prospective employees are considered and treated in a non-discriminatory manner with respect to all employment decisions. Furthermore, Coppin State University will solicit the cooperation and support of all employees for the University's policy and AAP.

In accordance with federal and state law, the University's plan of affirmative action for individuals with disabilities and covered veterans will be available for inspection in the Office of Human Resources during regular business hours, upon request.

Search Committee Members Confidentiality Agreement

Search committees are an integral body that are core to the interview and selection process for the hire of all University positions. All search committee members are required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement that will preserve the integrity of the selection process and protect the privacy of candidates. Search committee members are ethically bound to the utmost level of confidentiality. Specifics of committee deliberations should not be discussed with anyone outside of the search committee.
