Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is 1-on-1 counseling with a licensed mental health professional. It can help you better understand your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It can also help you make life and behavior changes to improve quality of life and quality of your relationships.

Not sure if individual counseling is for you? Many students find it helpful to work through these types of experiences:

  • Concerns about relationships
  • Problems with school or studying
  • Questions about your future
  • Questions about your sexuality
  • Wanting to improve your family relationships
  • Wanting to be more assertive or improve your self-confidence
  • Eating too much or too little
  • Consuming alcohol or other drugs more than you’d like
  • Difficulty balancing all the demands of college
  • Thinking about ending your life
  • Grieving over the death of someone close to you
  • Concerned about someone close to you
  • Carrying a secret that you’ve never told anyone, but wish you could share

Group Counseling

Group counseling is therapy with a licensed professional and others working through similar mental health challenges. Group therapy can help you:

  • Learn more about how you are perceived by others
  • Experience a sense of acceptance and belonging
  • Discover that you are not alone in the difficulties you are experiencing
  • Benefit from the experience of helping others
  • Learn to constructively express your feelings and ideas to others

Sometimes groups can address topics like stress management, self-esteem, or anger management. During the fall, the Counseling Center offers group counseling around these topics:

  • Substance abuse (i.e. drugs, alcohol, etc.)
  • Grief
  • Family transitions
  • Disordered eating
  • Body image
  • Interpersonal relationships

Call the Counseling Center at 410.951.3939 to speak with someone about joining a group.

Off-campus Referrals

The Counseling Center offers services to help students with challenges that can be addressed over the short-term. When we work with a student who needs or requests services outside of what the Counseling Center can reasonably provide, we refer them to local mental health treatment providers. We also refer students when a student needs more long-term care than the Counseling Center can provide.

During the intake process and initial evaluation period, your assigned counselor consults with other Counseling Center staff to determine the appropriateness of an off-campus referral and to also identify treatment providers.
