Aquatics and Diving Policies

Mission

We offer recreational and wellness programs and activities for students, faculty, staff, and community members. We design our programs and activities to be fun, create excitement, and help our campus community lead holistically healthy lifestyles.

Aquatics Policies

Lifeguards on duty are responsible for enforcing the following rules:

  • A lifeguard or designated supervisor who has been approved by the Aquatics Director must be on deck before anyone enters the pool.
  • No swimmer with open sores, infection or contagious diseases may use the pools.
  • Users must wear a clean bathing suit (no cut-offs) to enter pool.
  • No street shoes are permitted on the pool deck by swimming patrons.
  • No running, pushing, horse playing or other high risk behavior in the pool area.
  • No alcohol, use of drugs or smoking in the pool area; those under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be asked to leave.
  • No glass, sharp metal objects or toys in the pool area
  • No balls or inflatable in the pool area during Open Recreation.
  • Kickboards pull buoys, and aqua-jogging belts should not be used as flotation devices.
  • Swimmers are not permitted to hang on the lane lines.
  • No animals or bicycles are allowed in the pool area
  • No diving or jumping from the starting platforms during Open Recreation Center; starting platforms are to be used only under the supervision of competitive swim team coaches.
  • No diving or jumping from the sides of main pool or from the 4 foot shallow end during Open Recreation; diving from the side of the pool is allowed only in areas 5 feet or deeper.
  • Food and drink (including chewing gum) shall not be permitted in the on the deck area.
  • No spitting or urination in the pool or on the deck
  • Spectators are restricted to the benches on the pool deck and bleacher area. Not permitted to stand over pool edges.
  • Lifeguards may expel any patron who does not conform to the rules listed herein or posted in the area.
  • No prolonged underwater swimming or breath holding during Open Recreation.
  • Children under 7 years of age MUST be supervised on the deck or in the pool by their parent or guardian who must be suited to swim. Parents/Guardians of children under 12 years of age must remain on the pool deck/spectator area while children are swimming.
  • Private lessons may not be given by non-CSU Aquatics Staff at any time.
  • All Coppin State University staff, including lifeguards, has the authority and responsibility to enforce the rules of the pool. Any user who elects to ignore staff requests regarding pool regulations will be subject to expulsion from the facility.

Diving Policies

Lifeguards on duty are responsible for enforcing the following rules:

  • Diving from the side of the pool: Diving is not allowed from the side of the pool in water less than 5 feet deep.
  • The only exception to this rule is supervised diving from the starting blocks by competitive swim team coaches.
  • Diving from the starting blocks
  • The starting blocks are used only under the supervision of a certified CRW Swim Instructor.
  • The starting blocks are not to be used for recreational use
  • The starting blocks should be closed by placing an orange cone on each block during all activities except swim team practices.
