Biography

Mona Calhoun is the Chairperson for the Health Information Management Program at Coppin State University, where she developed the program from its start in 2006. She has close to 35 years’ experience in the profession. Prior to joining Coppin she served as a Director of Health Information Management for various healthcare settings, including, acute care, behavioral health, rehabilitation, outpatient clinics and she did consulting. The program is the only accredited HIM Baccalaureate Program in the state. Under her leadership the program has expanded to the campus of the University System of Maryland in Hagerstown. In addition, the program now offers a master’s in health information management. Professor Calhoun is active with Maryland Health Information Management Association, where she has served on the board in various capacities since 2004 and with American Health Information Management Association where she has served as a member and chair of several committees since 2010. She also serves on several health information technology programs advisory boards in the area and is active in her community and church. Professor Calhoun has a PhD in Psychometrics from Morgan State University. Her research interest is in studying factors that impact students with learning disabilities academic trajectory and identifying mechanisms to support their success in postsecondary education.

 
 Her dissertation topic was Parental Involvement as A Moderator For Students With Learning Disabilities Aspiring To Attend College.

Her research interests are in assessment and evaluation, survey and instrument development and validation, universal design for teaching and learning, and classroom engagement, and measuring the effect accommodations have on self-regulation skills for students with learning disabilities and if parental involvement acts as a mediator between the child’s desire to attend college and the likelihood he or she will attend college.
