Mona Calhoun is an Associate Professor in the Health Information Management Program at Coppin State University, where she has served as the program's lead from its inception in 2006 until June 30, 2026. She has over 38 years of professional experience. Prior to joining Coppin, she served as a Director of Health Information Management in various healthcare settings, including acute care, behavioral health, rehabilitation, and outpatient clinics, and she also provided consulting services. The program is the only accredited HIM Baccalaureate Program in the state. During her leadership, the program expanded to offering courses at the University System of Maryland campus in Hagerstown for a few years. In addition, the program now offers a master’s in health information management, a Bachelor of Professional Studies in Health Information Management, and an accelerated pathway from bachelor's to master's.. Professor Calhoun is active with the Maryland Health Information Management Association (MDHIMA), where she has served on the board in various capacities. Additionally, she has served as a member and chair of several committees for the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), and was a former President of the Association. She also serves on several advisory boards for health information technology programs in the area and is active in her community and church. Professor Calhoun has a PhD in Psychometrics from Morgan State University. Her research interest is in studying factors that impact the academic trajectories of students with learning disabilities and identifying mechanisms to support their success in postsecondary education.
Her dissertation topic was Parental Involvement as A Moderator for Students With Learning Disabilities Aspiring to Attend College.
