Welcome to the Department of Natural Sciences at Coppin State University. The department offers bachelor's degree programs in Biology and Chemistry and is home to 11 full-time faculty, 2 staff and 162 undergraduate majors. Our programs prepare students for many careers options and our graduates have been accepted to Medical School, School of Physical Therapy, School of Pharmacy, Physician Assistant Program and graduate programs (at Master's and Ph.D. levels) in chemistry and biomedical sciences.

While exploring the links on this page, you will find that our faculty has a broad range of teaching and research interests. Our faculty are committed to providing students with instruction that is contemporary and infused with active learning strategies proven to be effective in achieving high learning outcomes.

This is an exciting time for the science programs at Coppin, for we are moving to the new Science and Technology Center which is equipped with state-of- the art labs and class rooms with extensive audiovisual capabilities suitable for teaching the technologically savvy generation of today. The Biology labs have capabilities for tissue and cell culture, spectrophotometry and advanced microbial studies. The Chemistry labs will enable advanced research in Nanotechnology, Organic Synthesis and Biochemistry. The center also has a modern greenhouse facility that will enable us undertake innovative and inter-disciplinary research in environmental sustainability to promote economically sound and socially desirable solutions.

The new facility will enable us start new academic programs and at the moment new programs are in the making. We are ready to start new concentrations in applied sciences (for students who want to go to Medical school, Pharmacy and physician assistant program), Computation chemistry and Biochemistry. In addition, new majors in Nano-technology and material physics, and new concentrations in Environmental Sustainability and Microbiology are forthcoming.

I invite you to explore this site and learn more about us and what we do in the Department of Natural Sciences. If you have further questions, please call us at 410-951-4111 or email us at MJiru@Coppin.edu
