Welcome to the website of the Helene Fuld School of Nursing at Coppin State University. Because of your decision to become a nurse, advanced practice nurse or Health Information Management professional, you will soon be adding to the ranks of individuals who are critical thinkers, caring, sensitive and want to make a difference.

Graduates from our baccalaureate, RN to BSN and masters programs (family nurse practitioner and post-masters certificate) are prepared to deliver culturally sensitive health care to diverse populations within an urban environment and to practice across multiple settings. The curriculum reflects an emphasis on primary health care, patient education, health promotion, rehabilitation, and self care. The curriculum is also reflective of the emphasis on case management, health care policy and economics, research methods, outcome measures, legislative advocacy and management of data technology.

Both the Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing programs are accredited by the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The Helene Fuld School of Nursing is an agency member of the Council of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs of the National League for Nursing.

Graduates of our Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (HIM) are experts in:

• administering computer information systems
• managing patient health information and medical records
• coding the diagnoses and procedures for healthcare services provided to patients

This degree along with the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) Certification that you will achieve after graduation tells employers that you have been trained and tested to implement best practices and apply current technology solutions!

Coppin State University opened our new Health and Human Services Building which has been occupied since August 2008. The School of Nursing is one of the major residents of this new facility along with other academic programs such as the Honors College and the School of Professional Studies: Criminal Justice, Social Work, Applied Psychology and Rehabilitation Counseling, and Interdisciplinary Studies. This “state-of-the-art” building contains classrooms, laboratories, offices, diagnostic and treatment facilities, an early childhood demonstration suite, as well as the Community Health Center.

The School of Nursing operates the Community Health Center which is a nurse-managed clinic. The Center has the unique mission to provide health care that is sensitive to societal needs, demands, and values, with providers who are culturally sensitive and responsive to changing trends and needs of inner city clients. In keeping with the mission of the University, the Center seeks to improve the health and quality of life of persons residing in the Coppin Heights Community, the University campus community and the surrounding area. The Center provides comprehensive, holistic, and family health care services. Services are available on a walk-in basis as well as by appointment. A number of insurance plans are accepted and self-payment plans are based on income.

The faculty, students, staff and alumni of this School are prepared to shape healthcare and health practice for this nation and will continue to influence nursing education, research and service. We will continue to advocate prevention of urban problems through community participation and education.
