Special message from President Maria Thompson

August 31, 2018
Dear Coppin Campus Community,
Once again, the spirit of close collaboration--which is a hallmark of Coppin State University--has resulted in a strong start to a new academic year.  I want to take this occasion to express my deep gratitude to Coppin’s faculty, staff, administration--and most especially--our students, for all that you have contributed to the successful launch of our fall semester.  I hope that the summer months provided ample opportunity to relax, recharge, and reconnect with family and friends.
As I have previously communicated, I was required to deal with some personal health challenges over the past several months. I’m pleased to report that my treatment has been successful, and the doctors have been encouraged by my steady progress toward complete and full recovery. Although my progress is on course, it’s taken a bit more time than I anticipated to get back to my energetic self and, recently, my doctors have encouraged me to take some additional time to regain my full strength.
Consequently, I’ve decided to follow doctors’ orders and take some additional time over the coming few weeks.  During my absence, our Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Leontye Lewis, along with Vice President for Administration & Finance, Stephen Danik, will work together to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office of the President, and they will ensure the close coordination of all campus units.  I’m grateful for their willingness to take on these interim and additional responsibilities.
You can be assured that I’m eager to be back at Coppin and fully engaged with you as we move our University forward and build on the close and effective collaboration that resulted in our successful Middle States Accreditation.  Indeed, we have much to be proud of, even as we recognize that we have much yet to accomplish.  One thing is certain: there is no shortage of commitment or a willingness to share, generously, the talents and capabilities that you possess to enhance our prospects at Coppin. Together, I have every confidence that we will make meaningful progress in our key strategic priorities to increase enrollment by attracting more new students and retaining more current students and ensure that an increasing proportion of students who begin at Coppin State, graduate from Coppin State, with all of the support and encouragement they require.
To ensure that I reach as many of you as possible, I have also recorded a short video message, which I hope you will take a moment to view:
I will certainly be in touch and look forward to seeing you, soon, around campus.  In the meantime, know that you will be in my constant thoughts as, together, we commit to making the most of this new academic year at Coppin State University.
Best personal regards,
Maria Thompson, Ph.D. President
