Baltimore, MD – Coppin State University has been selected to receive a Wilson H. Elkins Professorship for FY2018. The $50,000 award supports the work of Dr. Kavita Hegde, Associate Professor of Biology in the Department of Natural Sciences at Coppin.
“The Coppin family congratulates Dr. Hegde for receiving this prestigious Professorship,” said Dr. Maria Thompson, President of Coppin State University. “This is another example of how Coppin’s team is conducting outstanding scholarly work with community impact. The knowledge gained from this work can have a significant impact on the Coppin community and beyond.”
Dr. Hegde’s work involves ophthalmological research, creating community awareness about common causes of vision impairment and blindness. She has performed several years of research on the retina and the lens. Ongoing research is being conducted to prevent and treat related diseases. Dr. Hegde says, “My current work is adding to the body of knowledge that we previously had. This award will go a long way to fuel the project and help me continue with my studies.”
The Elkins Professorship was established in 1978 as the first permanently endowed, university-wide professorship at the University of Maryland. The Professorship may be used to recruit an outstanding individual to an institution or to provide special recognition and support to a current outstanding member of the faculty. Special effort is made to bestow the award in those areas where the Elkins Professor will have an opportunity to make an important contribution to the teaching, research, and public service mission of the institution and the entire University System of Maryland.
