Charter Schools

Our Charter School

In Maryland, public charter schools are public schools and are free and open to all children throughout the state. Maryland’s current public charter school law was enacted in 2003. It enables the establishment of charter schools "to provide innovative learning opportunities and creative educational approaches to improve the education of students."

2013 Maryland Code EDUCATION § 9-101

Coppin State University is an operator of Coppin Academy High School. "Operator" is the term used for the non-profit organization that manages a charter school. The charter is awarded by the Baltimore City School Board and grants the school more operational autonomy than non-charter public schools. Students enrolled at Coppin Academy High School hail from a wide range of neighborhoods, income levels, and ethnic backgrounds. Like most other public charter schools in Maryland, principals and teachers of the charter school operated by Coppin State University are employees of the local school district and are represented by the local bargaining units. Families should ask at the school about the application and admission process.

Our charter school enrolls a student total that is slightly over 300 students in 9th through 12th grades.
