Nursing (MSN) All Academic Programs
The Helene Fuld School of Nursing offers the traditional BSN, an RN to BSN Completion Program, and a Master of Science in Nursing degree and Post-Master Certification in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). As a master’s program student, a total of forty-eight to fifty-one (48-51) credits will be required to earn a Master’s Degree in Nursing. As a post-master’s student, a total of thirty-one (31) credits will be required to earn a certificate in the FNP program.
MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING
Graduate education builds on the foundation of undergraduate education. It prepares nurse professionals with advanced practice skills necessary to function as experts who provide direct care in a specialized area of clinical practice. Graduates incorporate advanced theory and research skills into the competencies required to assume responsibility and accountability for the health promotion, assessment, diagnosis and management of the problems of culturally diverse clients.
The graduate nursing program at Coppin State University responds to the health personnel trends and needs of Baltimore City’s urban communities, while focusing on the specialty role of the primary care nurse practitioner to define practice and prescribe the educational preparation required.
The purpose of the FNP program in the Helene Fuld School of Nursing is to prepare practitioners to provide advanced primary health care to the underserved population in the urban setting. The curriculum content reflects integration of various concepts that are essential for the graduate program, with unique emphasis on primary care of the urban community.
MSN PROGRAM TERMINAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the Master of Science in Nursing Program the graduate will be able to:
- Acquire advanced knowledge from the science and humanities to support advanced nursing practice and role development.
- Expand personal knowledge of nursing theories and concepts to serve as a basis for advanced nursing practice.
- Acquire the knowledge and skills related to a specific role in nursing.
- Acquire advanced knowledge and skills in the research process.
- Provide care for urban-based ethnically and culturally diverse clients, in health and illness, utilizing appropriate theoretical frameworks.
- Plan, initiate, and evaluate change in the health care system.
- Utilize computers and other technologies to manage, evaluate, and investigate health care issues.
- Develop and implement leadership strategies for the improvement of health care.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplined health care teams to foster continuity of care.
- Advocate for health care consumer improvement, and for the advancement of nursing as a profession.
- Participate in lifelong learning as a professional member of society.
- Acquire a foundation for doctoral study.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM
- A Baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
- Satisfactory completion of a course in elementary statistics.
- Undergraduate cGPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. If cGPA is below 3.0, provisional acceptance will be considered.
- Official scores on the aptitude portion of GRE, which includes scores on verbal, quantitative and analytical skills.
- A photocopy of current licensure for the practice of nursing in at least one state or in a foreign country. For some courses a U.S. license is required.
- Evidence of personal and professional qualification in the form of three (3) professional recommendations.
- A personal interview is required.
- The Office of Admissions must receive application and supporting documents for the Master’s and Post-Master’s programs by July 15th for fall semester and December 15th for spring semester.
- The FNP program admits students to the fall, spring and summer terms. All applicants must submit the following materials:
- Complete the Coppin State University Graduate Division Application for Admission, pay the required application fee, and submit three (3) letters of recommendation. Have this information sent to the Office of Admissions.
- Official transcripts from each college or university you attended should be sent to the Office of Admissions.
- A photocopy of current R.N. licensure in the State of Maryland or valid member of the Nurse Multi-State Licensure Compact should be submitted to the CSU Office of Admissions.
- A statement of goals and objectives should be submitted to the CSU Office of Admissions.
- International applicants must submit an official Testing of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report to the Office of Admissions.
- Proof of satisfactory completion of a course in statistics and nursing research.
- Official record of results of the aptitude portion of the GRE sent directly to the Office of Admissions.
