“somebody/ anybody . . . sing a black girl’s song bring her out to know herself . . . carin/ struggle/ hard times sing her song of life . . . .

she’s been dead so long    .  .  .  closed in silence for so long  .  .  .  she doesn’t know the sound .  .  .  of her own voice .  .  .  sing the song of her possibilities  .   .   .   let her be born  .  .  .  & handled warmly.”

Ntozake Shange’s characters, seven African American women identified only by the names of colors, communicate through poetry, music and dance, revealing the women’s perceptions of their own experiences, sexuality and relationships.  Portraying multiple characters, they lead us into their lives’ journeys .  .  .  lighthearted .  .  .  bewildered .  .  .  sorrowful .  .  .  indignant .  .  . outraged .  .  .  gut-wrenching .  .  .   agonized .  .  .  and, ultimately, resilient.  Speaking their own truths and listening to each other’s voices, they propel themselves into the joy and richness of self-affirmation, emerging into serene, powerful sisterhood.  This production is directed by Mama Rashida Forman-Bey, a Coppin urban arts senior and one of the founding directors of WombWork Productions.
