Community Dance Schedule

Class Schedule

Community Dance classes are open to ages 3 ½ to adults. Classes are held in the Physical Education Complex (PEC) located on the east side of the campus. Enter the PEC building off of Warwick Avenue directly across from the CSU dormitories, and take the elevator to the 2nd floor dance studio lobby to register. Registration is held on Saturdays from 9:30-1:00 p.m.

Community Master Classes are open to teens and adults. Drop In Rate $12.00 General Public, $10 Students, and $5.00 CSU Students. The schedule will be posted in October for guest classes featured throughout the semester or email dance@coppin.edu for more information.

Classes

Creative Movement (ages 3 to 5)

This course is for youngest students to begin the process of learning basic ballet technique. The course focus on learning foundational ballet terminology performed with creative movement and music.

Ballet Courses (Ages 6 and up)

Student placed based on skills level

Intro to Ballet - This course is for students with a desire to learn classical ballet. The course focuses on developing the student’s core understanding of classical ballet vocabulary and technique.

Attire: Light Blue Theatrical Girls Short Sleeve Dance Leotard - Style # N5502C, suntan convertible tights and tan/flesh color ballet shoes.

Ballet fundamentals - An extension of the intro course strengthens movement vocabulary and additional focus on dance history

Attire: Royal Blue Theatrical Girls Short Sleeve Dance Leotard - Style # N5502C, suntan convertible tight and flesh color ballet shoes.

Ballet - Continues concepts from previous two classes with a focus on repertoire and developing the dance major/ dance entrepreneur.

Attire: Black leotard CAPEZIO Short Sleeve Leotard Style # CC400, suntan convertible tights and flesh color ballet shoes


Hip Hop (Ages 6 and up)

This course focuses on physicality, musicality and flexibility. Elements of Hip Hop culture and history are taught as student dance to mixtures of rap, pop and forms of club music

Attire: Coppin Community Dance Program Tee-shirt, black dance pants. CLEAN tennis shoes/sneakers. Must be brought with you and not worn outside.


West African Dance (Ages 6 and up)

This course introduces and reinforces student knowledge of West African dance techniques of: Senegal, Liberia, The Gambia, Guinea and the Ivory Coast. This course places emphasizes on both musicality and comprehension of movement in order to maintain the communal environment that is descriptive of West African technique classes. Class structure includes full body warm-up, movement breakdown in center, and movement danced across floor all performed to live or recorded percussion.

Attire: Coppin Community Dance program shirt, dance pants, lappa/wrap skirt (girls)


Musical Theater/Jazz (ages 6 and up)

This is course is open to students interested in learning traditional jazz technique, movements and choreography.

Attire: Leotard, black jazz pants or tights and jazz shoes


Modern Dance courses (ages 6 and up)

Intro to Modern Dance - This course is designed to experiment with the use of gravity; increase flexibility, musicality, fluidity a by working with the spirals that already exist within the body. Students begin by finding the core, awakening a home base from which to move. This shall lead to a lengthening of the extremities to find the most distal points. Using efficient transitions and increasing momentum, students will paint the space with a seamless through-line from one movement to the next.

Modern Dance Fundamentals - An extension of the intro course strengthens movement vocabulary and additional focus history and specific styles (ex. Dunham, Horton, or Graham)

Attire: Royal Blue Theatrical Girls Short Sleeve Dance Leotard - Style # N5502C, suntan convertible tight and flesh color ballet shoes.

Modern Dance - Continues concepts from previous two classes with a focus on repertoire and developing the dance major/ dance entrepreneur

Liturgical/Praise Dance

This course uses element of Ballet, Jazz and Lyrical modern dance to bring spiritual/inspirational songs to life

Attire: leotard, with tights or black dance pants


Major Hour

A 4-6 workshop series led by either CDP instructors or CSU dance majors.  A great way to explore multiple technique forms.
