Our goals reflect the University's commitment to provide relevant, high caliber programs and services which are accessible to students and to the citizens of the metropolitan Baltimore area. They also underscore the fact that Coppin State University is willing to accept responsibility for providing resources which contribute to the improvement of the quality of life in the Baltimore metropolitan area.
The Coppin State University Counseling Center is staffed by professionals and paraprofessionals who will provide health and wellness services in cooperation with the Coppin State University Division of Nursing Community Health Center. However, the primary focus of the Center will be to promote a healthier lifestyle among students through the use of creative and innovative but proven preventive health practices and programming. Specific activities will include but will not be limited to the following:
- Targeted workshops in areas such as stress, smoking, substance abuse, nutrition, safety, exercise and illness prevention,
- Referral to off-campus community agencies and individual health care providers (i.e., private practitioners, CSC PPO Physicians Network, etc.),
- Use of student peer educators to provide educational and awareness training sessions as an outreach service to the community. The "each-one-teach-one, train-the-trainer" model will be used to introduce topics such as hypertension, substance abuse, parenting, and STD's including AIDS.
- Provision of part-time mental health consultation services.
The Community Outreach Program provides non-credit workshops and credit courses on a wide range of topics to churches and community organizations.
The Consumer Education Center (CEC) is an affiliate of historic Coppin State University in Baltimore, MD. that offers guidance to individuals on a variety of financial issues. The CEC offers immediate assistance to individuals experiencing financial trouble and who may be on the verge of wage garnishment or bankruptcy. CEC’s Debt Management Program assist Individuals with developing
a plan for paying off their debts and regaining financial stability.
The Coppin Heights Community Development Corporation (CHCDC) was established to carry out the mission of community revitalization in the inner city of West Baltimore, Md. The CHCDC seeks to do this by developing safe and affordable housing, expanding economic opportunities for residents, and raising the economic, education and social levels of its residents.
