CSU Choral Program
The Coppin State University Choral Program is designed for students who enjoy singing and performing. The students who
participate in the program are talented, creative, and committed to sharing their musical gift while providing quality
performances. The Choral Program consists of two organizations, the University Choir and the Coppin Touring Ensemble.
The Coppin State University Concert Choir
The University Choir is a performing class designed for students who have a desire to learn the techniques of choral
singing through the study of a variety of choral styles. Public performance is required. Students earn two elective credits
per semester for their participation. Any student who wishes to participate without receiving credit is also welcomed.
The Coppin Touring Ensemble
The Coppin Touring Ensemble is an organization of students who are among the top vocalists on campus. Membership in the
ensemble is by audition only. Previous vocal experience is welcome but not required.
Organized in November 1998, the Touring Ensemble has had many noteworthy performance experiences.
- Performed at a Christmas reception in the East Room of the White House
- Performed at The National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the National Black Caucus of
the U.S. Congress
- Participated with the Peabody Conservatory Choir and Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's "The Ninth
Symphony"
- Traveled to Korea as cultural ambassadors representing the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland.
During the tour, the ensemble sang for the Korean Congress. The tour was so successful that the group was invited to return
to Korea for additional concerts the following year
- Featured performers at the national convention of the National Congress of Teachers of English. The famed
African-American poet Lucille Clifton was honored at the affair, and the touring ensemble paid tribute to Clifton by
performing a choral selection based on the text of her poem "Hey Girls"
- Featured performers for the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus Annual Award Ceremony
- Produced a "CD" of choral music
- Featured performers on two PBS telecasts: "Music of the Seoul", a documentary of the ensembles Korean tour
and " Maryland State of Mind", a documentary which highlighted activities of Maryland State educational institutions
- Presented an exciting, highly successful and uniquely staged performance of Handel's "Messiah" entitled
"Messiah for a new Millennium" sponsored and televised by WJZ TV, Baltimore's ABC affiliate
