I found that a significant meeting place for these great artists was the print. Masters in their fields, they are widely renowned for media like sculpture, quilting, collage, painting, even painted furniture, but printmaking was common ground. It seemed an important point to begin conversations about process and exquisite design, as well as a dialogue about the fundamental concerns of culture and authentic identity. From the most abstract to the most representational, these works concisely talk about us – all of us. There is no prescribed theme for the show, but as we look closely, one may find clear and specific threads binding the work. These twenty-six beautiful pieces explore tragedy and humor, spirituality and history, determination and resolve. We, at Coppin State University, are honored to present this select group of seventeen African American artists. This important exhibition features artists working from the Harlem Renaissance to this moment, exceeding half a dozen print processes, and offering powerful and alternative views of celebrated American artists. Linda Day Clark, Curator
