Two young black men teach each other lessons of dignity and strength. Set in Louisiana in 1948, this play explores attitudes that could have come from Ferguson, Missouri, today.

Coppin Repertory Theatre presents Romulus Linney’s A Lesson Before Dying, based on the Oprah’s Book Club selected and Pulitzer Prize nominated novel by Ernest Gaines.  The production will run in the James Weldon Johnson Auditorium Thursday through Monday, October 23-27, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday and at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.  The auditorium is at the 2500 W. North Avenue entrance to the campus, and parking is available adjacent to the building.

Jefferson, a young man incarcerated for a murder he did not commit, will soon lose his life and has already lost his self-respect.  Grant Wiggins, a young teacher, has most of his life ahead of him, but has already lost respect for the situation in which he lives.  As the play unfolds, these two young black men teach each other the lessons they need to meet their very different futures with dignity and with strength.

Set in segregated Louisiana in 1948, this play explores racial perceptions and attitudes that could have been lifted from the newspapers of Ferguson, Missouri and elsewhere in the United States today.  This production is recommended for audience members who are at least 13 years of age.

General admission is $15 and only $10 for senior citizens and students from other schools.  Admission for Coppin students with fall, 2014, Coppin IDs is just $5.00.  For additional information, call 410 - 951-3366 or 410 - 951-3369.

Join us for this production and challenge yourself to respond to these lessons.
