The Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs is the principal administrative officer responsible for the academic program and for instructional program support services and acts as the chief executive officer of the University in the absence of the President. Reporting directly to him are: the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs; the Deans of Arts & Sciences and Honors, Education, Nursing, Graduate Studies, and the Dian of Quality Assurance; the Directors of the Library, of the Office of Institutional Research, and the Coordinator of Academic Computing.
The Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs is responsible for assuming the responsibilities of the Vice President for Academic Affairs in his absence and assisting him as may be required to promote the academic programs of the University; administering the Summer and Winter academic sessions, all distance education, off-campus, and non-credit programs; coordinating revisions of the Faculty Handbook and University Catalog; monitoring the part-time/overload contracting process; and reviewing University academic policies and procedures recommending additions, deletions, or modifications as may be required.
The Dean of Arts & Sciences and Honors is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the following undergraduate academic programs: Criminal Justice, Fine and Communication Arts, History, Geography, International Studies, Management Science, Mathematics and Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Psychology, and Social Sciences. This Dean also is responsible for administering the General Studies and Departmental Honors Programs.
The Dean of Education is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the following undergraduate academic programs: Teacher Education, Adult and General Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Health; Physical Education and Recreation, and Special Education. This Dean is also responsible for administering the Maryland Center for Thinking Studies, the Higher Education Unit, the Saturday School Program, and the Teaching Thinking at Home Series.
The Dean of Nursing is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the following undergraduate academic programs in the Helene Fuld School of Nursing: the two-year RN-BSN program and the four-year Generic Nursing Program. This Dean is also responsible for administering the Coppin State University Nursing Center; a nurse-managed clinic.
The Dean of Graduate studies is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the following graduate programs: Master of Science in Adult and Continuing Education; Master of Science in Criminal Justice; Master of Education in Correctional Education; Master of Education in Rehabilitation Counseling; Master of Education in Special Education; and the Master of Arts in Teaching.
The Dean of Quality Assurance is responsible for reviewing all academic and administrative policies, procedures, and practices of the University to identify those with implications for the retention and graduation of students and to determine whether each is an enhancement or an impediment in retaining and graduating students; monitoring academic performance of all students beginning at the completion of the freshman year and continuing through graduation; coordinating retention functions with academic support services; developing and maintaining appropriate academic tacking systems for students; coordinate the developmental studies thrust; and develop plans for the establishment of quality assurance parameters for Coppin Students.
The Department Chair is responsible for the development and administration of that unit with the assistance of the faculty. The chairperson reports directly to the dean of the division embracing the department and act as principal advisor to the dean on academic matters pertaining to the department.
The Academic Planning Council is responsible for assisting the Vice President for Academic Affairs in determining the long-range goals for the academic program.
The Academic Program Review Committee is responsible for reviewing academic program and faculty productivity data and to use said data in making recommendation to the Vice President for Academic Affairs relative to the productivity and quality of academic programs and faculty.
The Faculty Development Committee is responsible for reviewing applications for: Title III-related study leaves; stipends for released time for research; disseminating information on government and private funding sources and determining strategies and incentives for encouraging faculty research; determining the means for using “master teachers” in faculty development; and making its recommendations to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The Faculty Hearing Committee and Faculty Mediation Committee is responsible for reviewing matters regarding infringement of academic freedom and making recommendations to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The Faculty Senate is responsible for promoting the general welfare of the faculty and guaranteeing each faculty member procedural and substantive due process.
The Graduate Council is responsible for recommending to the Vice President for Academic Affairs all additions, deletions, and modification in the graduate curriculum and in the Graduate Division’s academic standards and policies.
The Honors and Scholarship Committee is responsible for recommending to the Vice President for Academic Affairs policies regarding the nature of honors seminars, honors program requirements, counseling of honors students, and scholarship activities of honors students. The Committee is also responsible for developing techniques for recruiting both new and continuing students to the honors program.
The Student Academic Review Committee is responsible for recommending to the Vice President for Academic Affairs the criteria for probation and suspension of students and for making recommendations on all applications for readmission.
