Coppin State University News
by Tia Lewis:
On Saturday, October 12, 2013 Coppin State University students and volunteers from area high schools will gather on the university’s campus to pack 300 lunches and later deliver them to area homeless shelters for the movement,#HashtagLunchbag. The distribution is from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Started in 2012, a group of young Los Angeles philanthropists gathered to deliver hearty and balanced meals prepared by themselves for the local homeless community on Christmas Day. #HashtagLunchbag is a movement dedicated to utilizing social media to bring awareness and eliminate hunger needs in local communities. http://www.hashtaglunchbag.com/
The #HashtagLunchbag Baltimore movement, led by Coppin State University senior Brittany Wagner and Coppin State Sports Management Association, was started to bring awareness to the homeless population in the city and shine a positive light on Coppin State.
“It will be great on Coppin State’s campus simply because there’s a lot going on in the surrounding community and they don’t necessarily show the good things about Coppin,” said Wagner. “I thought it would be a great thing to bring it to Baltimore through Coppin State University.”
Recent data from The United States Census Bureau shows that Baltimore’s overall homeless population swelled nearly 20 percent during the past two years and the number of homeless young people ages 13 to 24 jumped by 50 percent. In addition, one in four Baltimore residents live in poverty and many more struggle just above the official poverty line.
For the local pilot, Safeway has donated a gift card and Hair Cuttery will be offering free haircuts on-site. Each bag will include a sandwich, water, a piece of fruit, a cookie and the #HashtagLunchbag signature on the front, a hash tag inside a heart.
