Larry Gibson Named Coppin State University’s 2013 Commencement Speaker

On Friday, May 17, 2013, Larry Gibson, law professor at The Francis King Carey School of Law at University of Maryland - Baltimore and Of Counsel at Shapiro, Sher, Guinot and Sandler, will deliver Coppin State University’s 2013 Commencement address.

The ceremony will take place at The Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Gibson, a native of Baltimore City, currently teaches Evidence, Civil Procedure, Racial Discrimination and the Law, and Election Law as a faculty member at the School of Law at University of Maryland. He is the author of “Young Thurgood: The Making of a Supreme Court Justice,” which describes the environment, people and events that shaped Thurgood Marshall’s attitudes, work habits and priorities in his formative years.  In 1972, Gibson became the first African-American law professor at the University of Virginia.

Gibson is on the Board of Trustees of the Maryland Historical Trust. He is vice-chairman of the Baltimore City Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation.  He is chairman of the Commission to Coordinate the Study, Commemoration and Impact of the History and Legacy of Slavery in Maryland. In addition, he served six years on the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners.

Larry S. Gibson earned his high school diploma from Baltimore City College.  From 1960 to 1964, Gibson attended Howard University in Washington D.C., where he was the student body president, the chairperson of D.C. Students for Civil Rights, and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.   In 1967, he earned his law degree from Columbia University in New York City.   He has received honorary doctorate degrees from Morgan State University and Sojourner Douglass College.
