The McNair Program began at Coppin State College (now University) in 1989, after the University won a grant from the United States Department of Education. Over 100 colleges and universities competed for the fourteen grants that were awarded that year. Funding was for four years (1989-92). The Program was funded for a second (1992-95), third (1995-99), fourth (1999-2003), and a fifth cycle (2003-2007).
The McNair Program is located in the Honors Division, which is part of Academic Affairs.
