ISSP Mentoring Group
The International Student Services Program has created the International Student Welcome Committee/Mentoring Program to help ease the adjustment process of incoming international students to the Coppin community. The program provides an opportunity for new and returning international students to connect with new students through various social activities and events in an effort to create a strong and supportive community. At the beginning of each academic year, the program pairs an incoming international student with a member of the Coppin student body who will be responsible for providing them with general information and support and guidance to help them succeed academically and socially. During meetings, our mentors should also engage international students in conversations that will assist in English proficiency which could help improve grades and offer healthier communication experiences and understanding of American culture.
Mentors can be any International or American student who has been at Coppin State University for at least one semester and is truly committed to learning about new cultures, expanding their world vision, and helping new international students adjust to their new lives away from home. A mentee should be sociable, approachable, reliable, and trustworthy. He/she should be able to maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries when sharing personal information, as well as be respectful toward other individuals. Having an interest in learning and sharing new cultural experiences is also essential.
