English Major Program Requirements

Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in English consists of 42 credits, exclusive of the "Special General Education Requirements" and the language and philosophy requirements for the BA degree. Students in the English: Secondary Education (B.S.) program satisfy the English portion of the program by fulfilling the English Major Requirements as listed below.

Undergraduate Degree Requirements
English majors earn the Bachelor of Arts degree, and satisfy the Departmental Assessment requirement by passing a comprehensive exam and submitting a passing writing portfolio. The Bachelor of Arts degree requires a grade of C or higher in an upper level philosophy course in addition to the GER philosophy option, and completion, with grades of C or higher, of at least six college credits in one foreign language at the intermediate level.

These are in addition to the GER and the requirements for the English Major.

  • Minimum of 120 Credits
  • Six credits of one foreign language at the intermediate level
  • Three credits of an upper level philosophy

Departmental Assessment (All Majors):

  • Comprehensive Exam
  • Writing Portfolio

Special General Education Requirements:

English majors satisfy the English option requirement by passing ENGL 208, and satisfy the world literature requirement by passing WLIT 203.

ENGL 335 or 336  Literature of Black American I or II
ENGL 353  Shakespeare
ENGL 302  Sociolinguistics
ENGL 496  Senior Colloquium
ENGL 3-- Any additional English literature course at the 300 or 400 level (must be literature; linguistics and writing courses do not satisfy this requirement). Students electing the English Secondary Education concentration must take ENGL 322, Adolescent Lit.
CRWR 303 or 304  or ENGL 305  or JRNL 210  Students in the English Secondary Education concentration must take ENGL 305.

Electives (9 Credits)

Electives are in addition to the core courses. The elective requirement is satisfied by any nine credits from among the following subjects: Creative Writing (CRWR), English (ENGL), Journalism (JRNL), Mass Communications (MCOM), Philosophy (PHIL), and World Literature (WLIT). Students in the English Secondary Education concentration must take ENGL 406, Advanced Grammar.
