The English major program at Coppin State University grounds students in a firm English/Liberal Arts curriculum to develop strong reading, writing, and thinking skills. The range of the program is from American, British and World literature to journalism and desktop publishing, the Internet, and interactive multi-media. Students are prepared for graduate programs in the humanities; for professional schools in areas such as law; and for careers in such professions as public relations, and creative writing. It also prepares students for a wide variety of careers in the expanding media industry. Students in the program produce two publications: the independent student newspaper Move and the creative journal Raise Up, which includes fiction, poetry, photography and art. In addition, students in the major produce the Westside News website. The program also features an active honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, which sponsors a variety of events including lectures, workshops and conferences.
The major in English includes a core curriculum in literature and writing. There are two degrees offered in the English Major Program: a Bachelor of Arts degree, which is a traditional, literature-based, liberal arts English concentration and a Bachelor of Science degree, which is an English/Education concentration that prepares students to teach on the secondary level (middle and/or high school). Students wishing to teach English in secondary schools fulfill the requirements of the English major (without the additional BA language & philosophy requirements), in addition to satisfying the requirements in the Secondary Education Program as determined by the Department of Adult and General Education.
