Bachelor of Science in English / Education
The Department of Humanities offers a BS degree for an English Secondary Education Concentration. All majors take a comprehensive examination and produce a writing portfolio for assessment. All ENGL majors must take WLIT 203 & ENGL 208 to fulfill literature GER courses.
Admission Requirements
Students who are interested in a major in English must have a GPA OF 2.0 or better; must submit a Declaration of Major Form; and must complete an interview with the Chairperson or another faculty member.
Admission Requirements for the English Secondary Education Concentration
- The student wishing to declare a concentration in English Secondary Education must meet the following criteria:
- Completed ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 or ENGL 103 and ENGL 104;
- Completed MATH 125 or MATH 132 (depending on the major);
- Completed a minimum of 30 SCH that count toward graduation;
- Attained a CGPA of 2.7;
- Achieved the minimum MSDE required score on the PRAXIS I examination;
- Completed EDUC 202 (with portfolio);
- Accepted into the Teacher Education Program of the School of Education.
- The student must obtain approval of the Humnanities Department Chair and the Secondary Education Department Chair by their signatures on the Declaration of Major Form.
- The student should continue taking courses as a major in Humanities until such time that s/he is eligible to take other courses in the secondary education program.
- After admittance to the Teacher Education Program, the student will take both education and English courses.

Departmental Assessment (All Majors)
Comprehensive Exam: This is an oral and written examination testing the major student's core competencies in literature.
Writing Portfolio: This is a representative collection of written work from the major student's literature and writing coursework at Coppin.
Special General Education Requirement
English majors satisfy the English option requirement by passing ENGL 208, and satisfy the world literature requirement by passing WLIT 203.
