So, now you know all the answers, right...but what are the questions? Here are the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.
Q: Does the University provide staff in the hall?
There are professional and paraprofessional (resident assistants, or RAs) staff working and living in the residence hall. The staff provides opportunities for each resident to enhance their personal, interpersonal, and educational development. Residents are encouraged to talk to their RA or the professional staff about any concerns or questions they have.
Q: What is a Resident Hall Director (RD)?
A full time staff member of the Office of Residence Life. These persons have appropriate educational background and experience and are carefully selected on the basis of their ability to provide leadership and facilitate interpersonal relationships among the residents of the hall.
Q: What is a Resident Assistant (RA)?
A RA is a student leader that lives on your floor. They are the first person you should talk to if you have a problem. They can also help you if you need things like a light bulb, submitting request for repairs to your room, or if you just need someone to talk to. Get to know your RA. They've been a student at Coppin State University and know the ropes. They can help you with anything you need to know about Coppin State, and more!
Q: Who do I see if I have problems with my roommate?
First, talk to your roommate. Chances are the problems are from a lack of communication. Talk to him/her and see if things can be worked out. A roommate contract might even help. Also, talk to your RA, they can be of tremendous assistance.
Q: Why should I live on campus?
Studies show that students who live on campus tend to make better grades. There are several reasons for this. For one, you are closer to things such as: the library, the computer lab, and the cafeteria. Another reason for the higher grades is the fact that the residence halls can be more conducive to studying than off-campus housing. You can always find someone to study with in the residence halls, just check out the lounge!
Q: Can I have guest in my room?
Of course! That's what visitation is for. All of your visitors, both male and female, can visit you in your hall during the set visitation hours. Remember visitation opportunities are a privilege not a right and are possible as long as you and your guest(s) follow the proper procedures for this privilege as outlined in the Residential Hall Handbook. When walking about the building visitors must be escorted at all times by the resident who checked that visitor into the residence hall.
Q: What is IRHC?
IRHC stands for Inter-Residence Hall Council. The IRHC is the resident governing body of on-campus housing. It is made up of student representatives from each Residence Hall. Acting as a go between for students and housing administration the IRHC communicates resident needs and desire to the University. Additionally the IRHC assist in Residence Life programming; examples of programs include social events, study breaks, crafts and intramural sports. This is a great way to meet people. By the way, your Hall Council is another way to get involved and make positive changes in your hall (it will also look great on your future résumé!). For more information ask your RA or Resident Hall Director.
Q: Will my room and/or roommate preferences be honored?
Your application and your application fee establish when you will be assigned. Students returning to the residence hall select their room assignment prior to new students being assigned. When making assignments, first consideration is given to roommate preference, then room request. The Office of Residential Life is unable to guarantee that all students will get their preferences. Any special circumstances you want us to consider when making your assignment should be written on the application form or in a separate letter to our office.
Q: Is there a Housing Application deadline?
No; however, students whose application materials and appropriate fee are received before March 30 for the fall and October 30 for the spring will receive priority attention in the room assignment process. Students applying for housing after July 15 for the fall and December 1 will start the room assignment process on the waiting list.
Q: Can I change the area or roommate preference on my application-contract after it's been submitted?
In order to change your room, roommate(s) or any other preference on the application, the Office of Residence Life must receive a written request. Your signature and social security number or student ID number must be included on the letter. After June 1, preference changes may not be accepted. If you met the March 1 deadline when you originally sent in your application your request for changes must be received before your room assignment has been made and you have signed a contract.
Q: When will I find out my room/hall assignment and my roommate(s)?
Students who meet the March 30 deadline will be sent their assignments around May 1. Students whose applications are received after March 30 who receives an assignment will be sent their assignment around August 1. The notice includes Building Name, room number, and your roommate's name and home telephone number if given permission to release it to you. Our office cannot release roommates' home telephone numbers. Please note that room assignments are on a first come first serve basis and depends on the availability of space.
