In this comedy, a family gathers to learn if its patriarch will survive a heart attack. Stories are revealed, as "with grace and humor" children come to terms with surprising family secrets.

Coppin State welcomes the 78th annual conference of the National Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts (NADSA) to the James Weldon Johnson Auditorium with a reprise performance of Samm-Art Williams' "The Waiting Room."

As the Innes family gathers in the waiting room of a hospital to learn if its patriarch, Pullen Innes, will survive a heart attack, his relatives and friends repeat family stories, and long-held family secrets are revealed.  Reviewing the New York production March 21, 2007, in The New York Times, Wilborn Hampton wrote, "'The Waiting Room' is a comedy, and it has its share of laughs.  But Mr. Williams also has things to say about the generation gap dividing young African-Americans today and their forebears who lived before Rosa Parks took a seat in the front of the bus, and about the importance of family . . . . (and) he says it all with grace and humor and without making it sound like a sermon."

Williams is best kown as a script writer for the television shows "Martin," "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper."  As a playwright, he received nominations for both the Tony and the Drama Desk awards in 1980 for "Home."

Coppin theatre professor Willie O. Jordan is directing the production.  The cast includes Coppin sophomores Tori Jacobs, Martique Smith and Pa'trick Womack; College of Southern Maryland sophomore Robert Hamilton; Coppin seniors Alyshia Bradley and Tashawna Fennell and Coppin alumni Roger MacDonald and Nickole Scroggins.  Coppin sophomore Mia Giles designed the set, and Coppin's technical director, James A. Brown, designed the lighting.  The stage manager is Sierra Upshaw, a Coppin junior, and the assistant stage manager is Coppin freshman Juan Ogando.

This special NADSA performance will be held Wednesday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m.  Individual ticket prices are $15 for general admission, $10 for non-Coppin students and senior citizens, and $5 for Coppin students with IDs.  Special group rates are also available.

The James Weldon Johnson Auditorium is the first building on the left at the main entrance to the campus, 2500 West North Avenue.  Campus parking is free on nights and weekends, and lots are conveniently located, adjacent to the auditorium.

For more information about the production and the NADSA conference, please call the Visual and Performing Arts Office at (410) 951-3369.   We look forward to seeing you at the theatre.
