COPPIN STATE UNIVERSITY DANCE ENSEMBLE WINS FIRST PLACE TROPHY AND $1000 AT THE HBCU BEST DANCE CREW COMPETITION on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 19TH, 2011!
After nights of 4-hour long rehearsals and a stunning performance at the HBCU Best Dance Crew Competition, the CSU Dance Ensemble continued to wave the Coppin banner high as they took 1ST PLACE and A CASH PRIZE OF $1000. The ensemble will use the prize money to fund their next off-campus professional competition at the Mid-Atlantic American Colleges Dance Festival Association (ACDFA) Dance Conference from March 9th- 13th. The CSU Dance Ensemble will adjudicate a faculty piece choreographed by Professor Alice Howes entitled "The Weird Sisters" and one student piece choreographed by Jenise Anthony, Alicia Williams and Tracey Warr entitled "Trapped".
The CSU Dance Ensemble presented a classical/ modern/ hip-hop piece that went against everything that the UMES competition was known for in terms of dance style. Even though this choice of genre made the ensemble's presentation unique, it also put them at a disadvantage because of what was expected and represented in years past at the competition. The CSU Dance Ensemble was determined to leave a mark in the competition with their chosen style---this only spurred the members to work harder and longer hours to attain their goals and perfect their piece!
