Department of Curriculum and Instruction

Welcome to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The department is committed to providing its teacher education candidates with exemplary programs and services that are congruent with the philosophy of the School of Education. We are elated that our undergraduate and graduate programs have been recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The department offers undergraduate degrees in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education, and graduate degrees in Curriculum and Instruction, Reading, and Teaching.

In keeping with the School of Education's commitment to ensure that teacher education candidates are well-qualified to meet the needs of diverse learners, we have aligned undergraduate and graduate programs with the Maryland State Department of Education Redesign of Teacher Education. The alignment with the Redesign will ensure that our candidates (1) receive a thorough academic background; (2) engage in site-based professional development; (3) possess theoretical and pedagogical knowledge, skills, and dispositions.

The department is comprised of seven distinguished faculty members that include Barbra Bush Foundation for Family Literacy grant recipients, Dean's Award recipients, McNair scholars, Tegrity grant recipients, and a Carson Legacy of Love Award recipient. We are committed to research, scholarship, and service.
