The Center is dedicated to assisting the Coppin community in developing and increasing the awareness of wellness by promoting healthy lifestyles. Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. Our goal is to enhance the awareness of the social, emotional, spiritual, environmental, intellectual, occupational, and physical aspects to balance the demands of life. The Center is a hub for educational resources, advocacy, and programs about significant wellness-related topics.

Mission

The Wellness Resource Center will function as a unit of the Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD). The mission of the Wellness Center is to promote and develop healthy lifestyle programs and activities that will help students become aware of at risk behaviors. The focus is aimed at educating, encouraging, and supporting healthy lifestyle choices.

Reasons why Wellness is important on a college campus

The American College Health Association's National College Health Assessment tells us that students report on academic success is most negatively influenced by: stress, concern for a friend or family member, sleep difficulties, depression or anxiety, relationship difficulties, and internet use/computer games.

What is Wellness?

Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a successful existence

Wellness helps you take charge of your health and provide the tools by which you can achieve health and wellness through educational programs and health screenings

Wellness is an active process that allows people to make choices in creating and maintaining lifestyles. It includes a positive approach to life and health that helps to maximize the individual's potential. A wellness lifestyle is associated with good physical health, emotional and spiritual stability, improved relationships, as well as increased satisfaction and joy.

Correlation between Wellness and Retention

Jensen et al. (1992) found a negative correlation between drinking and smoking and healthy behaviors in college students

Wechsler et al. (1998) found elevated risks for alcohol-related educational problems among binge drinkers

Haines et al. (1996) found that depressed mood was negatively correlated with academic performance

Filozof et al. (19998) found self-esteem and academic performance were linked

Trockel et al. (2000) found that sleep and wake up times showed the greatest impact on GPA in first year students

Poston et al. (1994) found more negative behaviors in nursing students were prevalent in mid-range students than in high performing students

McNeil and Grizzell (2006) found that students who participated in a health related program had statistically higher GPAs than those who did not participate

Studies show there are psychosocial variables related to retention including smoking, health-related quality of life, social support, and maladaptive coping strategies

Specific Areas of Wellness

Social-Social wellness is having positive interactions with and enjoying being with others. It is having comfort and ease during work and leisure situations and communicating feelings and needs to others. It involves developing and building close friendships and intimacy, practicing empathy and effective listening, caring for others and for the common good, and allowing others to care for you. It is recognizing the need for leisure and recreation and budgeting time for those activities.

Financial--Financial wellness is helping students with the practical knowledge and tools necessary to make effective financial decisions compatible with their personal financial philosophy.

Cultural--Cultural wellness is being aware of one's own cultural background, as well as the diversity and richness present in other cultural backgrounds. It involves interacting well with people of both genders, different backgrounds, lifestyles, abilities, ethnicities, and ages.

Physical--Physical wellness is the ability to apply your knowledge, motivation, commitment, behavior, self management, attitude, and skills toward achieving your personal fitness and health goals.

Spiritual--Spiritual wellness is the process of getting in touch with your spiritual core. It is a dedication that is unique for each individual. This process can vary from attending church to practicing meditation, or both. It is the process of looking within to become more in touch with the spiritual dimensions of your life.

Emotional--Emotional wellness is striving to meet emotional needs constructively. It is maintaining good mental health, a positive attitude, high self-esteem, and a strong self-image. It is the ability to respond resiliently to emotional states and the flow of life every day. It is dealing with a variety of situations realistically and learning more about yourself and how things you do affect your feelings. It is taking responsibility for your own behavior and responding to challenges as opportunities.

Intellectual--Intellectual wellness is having a curiosity and strong desire to learn. It is valuing many experiences, staying stimulated with new ideas, and sharing. It is responding to challenges and opportunities to grow, making plans, developing strategies, and solving problems. It is the ability to engage in clear thinking and recall, and to think independently, creatively, and critically.

Life Planning--Life planning wellness includes the process of discovering and maintaining a balance between personal, social, and vocational goals in your life. It involves taking advantage of opportunities to learn skills that will enhance satisfaction and enjoyment in your life. It is the awareness of your own strengths and skills, in addition to the time and financial commitment necessary to pursue the lifestyle of your choice.

Environmental--Environmental wellness is an awareness of the precarious state of the earth and the effects of your daily habits on the physical environment. It is maintaining a way of life that maximizes harmony with the earth and minimizes harm to the environment. It includes being involved in socially responsible activities to protect the environment.
