Dr. Mark Fleming is the newly appointed Director for the Center for Counseling and Student Development. He is originally from North Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in African American studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Psychology and Counseling from the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University. As part of his doctoral training, he completed a year long internship at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Upon the completion of his degree, he accepted a position as a Psychologist in the Counseling Center and as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Individual and Family Studies at the University of Delaware. He spent the last five years in that position finishing up his tenure as Assistant Director for Outreach and Assistant Professor.

He is a Licensed Psychologist, a Licensed Professional Counselor of Mental Health, a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, and credentialed as a national Health Service Provider in Psychology. He also maintains a private practice in psychology.

Joanne Matthews is the Wellness Coordinator in the Center for Counseling and Student Development. Ms. Matthews earned a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology from Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland. Ms. Matthews is a Certified Addictions Counselor and provides counseling and educational information on drugs and alcohol.

Mr. Christopher Thomas serves as the Assistant Director for Outreach and Clinical Services in the Center for Counseling and Student Development. Mr. Thomas attended Howard University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, and a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, School of Social Work. Mr. Thomas is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Washington, DC and a Licensed Certified Social Worker- Clinical in the state of Maryland. He has also completed advanced training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from the International Psychotherapy Institute located in Bethesda, MD. His professional experience includes both clinical and programming functions within residential, outpatient and community organizational treatment settings.

Linda W. Bowie is the Associate Director for Career Services in the Center for Counseling and Student Development. She has extensive experience as an administrator in the delivery of career services and programs that assist students in meeting their career goals and employers in meeting their hiring needs. She holds a Bachelor’s from Georgia Southern University and a Master’s in Guidance and Counseling from Jacksonville State University.

Seana Coulter is the Cooperative Education/Internship Coordinator in the Center for Counseling and Student Development. She holds a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Guidance and Counseling from Loyola College in Maryland.

Ms. Coulter assist students in identifying cooperative education/internship positions related to their field of interest. She provides career counseling to students; critiques resumes, cover letters and personal statements.

Helen Dunkley is the Work Study Coordinator. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Science from Coppin State College. She has worked in higher education for 17 years.


Paul Gass

Paul Gass is a Philosophy Instructor in the Department of Humanities and Coordinator for The Institute for Standardized Testing. He holds a B.A. in philosophy from The University of Michigan and a M.A. in philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University with a concentration in Ancient Greek Philosophy and the philosophy of language. His continuing research interests within contemporary analytic philosophy include the philosophy of mathematics and logic. Mr. Gass is a member of the National College Testing Association and has conducted workshops and tutorials for major test preparation organizations.


Jared Phillips

Mr. Jared Phillips serves as the International Student Coordinator/Coordinator of the Undergraduate Attendance Policy for the Center for Counseling and Student Development. He is originally from Indiana and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommunications with an emphasis in News at Ball State University. Mr. Phillips received his Master of Arts degree in College Counseling in Higher Education from the University of Delaware. During this time he was an intern in the CCSD at Coppin State.

Mr. Phillips assists international students with documentation such at CPT, OPT, SEVIS data, immigration matters, employment and other issues. He also develops and facilitates workshops and other outreach opportunities to aid in international student adjustment.

Mr. Phillips also provides clinical counseling services to international students around issues of adjustments, acculturation, stress and anxiety as well as services to the general student population.

The CCSD staff is committed to seeing students as quickly as possible.

We understand that the need to reschedule or cancel an appointment is something unavoidable. If for any reason you are unable to keep your scheduled appointment, please call the CCSD to cancel your appointment (24 hours notice is preferable).
