The Undergraduate Class Attendance Policy is housed in the Center for Counseling and Student Development. Students who are referred can expect a call and/or email notifying them that they have been referred for attendance, administratively withdrawn or given the grade of FX.
Students are recommended to stay in contact with their professors to communicate any absences taken – both excused and unexcused. Students are expected to attend and be on time for all sessions of a course for which they are registered.
The Institutional Undergraduate Class Attendance Policy affords students of a specified number of unexcused absences before being administratively withdrawn or given a failing grade.
The attendance policy allows unexcused absences up to two times the number of lecture hours for a course. A student who has unexcused absences exceeding two times the number of lecture hours for a course has surpassed the number of allowable unexcused absences and is in violation of the class attendance policy.
The student who exceeds the allowable number of unexcused absences may receive a grade of AW or FX based on unsatisfactory class attendance. The course instructor determines whether a student's absences are excused or unexcused. The number of allowable unexcused absences is based in the number of class excused or unexcused lecture hours per week, not on the number of class meetings.
The deadline for submitting AW forms (AW Grade Notification Form) is April 20th. Please be mindful of this date. AW forms arriving after this date will not be accepted. Any questions can be directed to the CCSD at CCSD@coppin.edu.
The AW process starts with a faculty member sending either a referral or grade notification form to the attendance coordinator via interoffice mail or hand delivery. The attendance coordinator verifies the student’s enrollment in the class and contacts the student to notify them of the referral and to determine any notable causes in the lack of attendance.
Note: A referral is not the same as a grade notification. The grade notification is a document authorizing either an AW or FX for the student. A referral simply asks that an inquiry be made to the student.
