Tips for a Successful Career Exploration Day Experience
Career Development and Cooperative Education Center

Before Career Exploration Day:
  1. Prepare your resume (relative to the type of position you are seeking) and have it critiqued by a Career Center staff member. Ensure there are no spelling or grammatical errors and print quality copies. View Resume Writing power point presentation
  2. Know your goals, interests and skills; and be able to clearly express your qualifications to the recruiter. (Develop a one minute statement and practice, practice, practice.) View Interviewing Techniques power point presentation
  3. Review the list of organizations, determine the ones of interest and prioritize your list. Visit their websites to learn as much as possible about the organizations and develop two or three questions to ask recruiters.
  4. Plan your attire - choose conservative business attire. Go to Quintessential Careers for dress for women or dress for men.

On Career Exploration Day:
  1. Sign in, obtain a program booklet, review the layout of the organizations and locate those on your priority list.
  2. Confidently introduce yourself to the recruiter, offer a firm handshake and good eye contact. (If there is a line, be patient or approach the next organization on your list and plan to return later.)
  3. Provide the recruiter with your resume. Express your interest in the organization and/or your qualifications for the position.
  4. Listen carefully and be prepared to answer questions the recruiter may ask. (An Interviewing Skills handout is available in the Center.)
  5. Ask questions you have prepared or follow up questions.
  6. Thank the recruiter for her/his time and ask for a business card. If they do not have a card, be sure to ask for the correct spelling of their name and contact information.

After Career Exploration Day:
  1. Write a thank you letter to the recruiters.
  2. Follow-up by e-mailing or calling employers if you have not received a response within two weeks after submitting your resume.
