Director's Bio

Juanita Gilliam, MA, Director

Juanita Gilliam is the Director of the Academic Resource Center and a part-time faculty member in the Department of Humanities. She joined the Coppin State University (CSU) family in 1976. While working at Coppin State University Ms. Gilliam has held many positions. She has taught as a full time faculty person in the in the English department (1976-1983). She has also served as the Coordinator for the Writing Center (1992-1998); Associate Director for the Academic Resource Center (1998-2002); and Associate Dean of the School of Arts in Sciences (2002-2005). Prior to that, she spent nine years at Sojourner Douglas College, where she served as a faculty member for the Department of English and Education, Writing Center Coordinator and as a curriculum developer. Juanita has taught courses at Morgan State University, Coppin State University, Sojourner Douglass College and Baltimore City Community College. During her tenure at CSU, she developed programs and services to benefit both traditional and non-traditional students.

Additionally, Juanita is a member of the HBCU Steering Committee- Maryland Historically Black Colleges and Universities; African American History Committee; Service Learning Consortium-Grant Partnership including Coppin State, Towson, and Salisbury Universities .She contributed two chapters in their publication Learning to Serve, Serving to Learn _a View From Higher Education.; Gala Committee at Coppin State University and Community Coordinator for the Coppin State University and Baltimore City Health Department Collaboration. Presently, she is working with the Coppin Man Outreach program, The Black Male Initiative and the CAPS Nursing Program by providing tutoring programs from the ARC. Ms. Gilliam is also a past director for 17 years of the PCSP (1992-2009) – Pre-College Summer Program and currently serves as a Program Manager/Coordinator of the expanded summer bridge program SASA (2010-Present) – Summer Academic Success Academy. She also has been an active participant on many university initiatives such as the Admissions Committee of the University, University Accreditation Steering Committee, Hiring Committees and the University Retention Task Force. Juanita not only works with her campus community, she is an avid community participant. While working within the community of Baltimore she has been a Campaign Manager- State Senatorial Candidate; Coppin Academy Task Force; Baltimore Health Department; NAACP; and Union Baptist Church after school volunteer program.

She has earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English Education from Morgan State University and holds two Masters’ Degrees; Master of Arts (MA) in English Literature from Morgan State University and a Master of Arts (MA) in Theology from St. Mary’s University and Seminary. She is in the Dissertation stage for her Ph.D. in English Literature at Morgan State University with hopes of being completed late 2011. Juanita also holds an advance certificate from Mt. Zion Baptist Church for Ministerial Counseling.

Ms. Gilliam has a love for traveling around the world. Her extensive traveling has allowed her to visit 5 of the 7 continents, and she looks forward to visiting other continents including Australia in her travelogue some day. Her duties as director of the ARC include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Center including planning and coordinating ARC programming, supervision, budget operation, departmental collaboration, and community outreach in Baltimore, Maryland. She has a strong commitment for the betterment of students and will do whatever she can to assist students to realize and reach their full potential.
