Traditional BSN Path Admissions Policies and Criteria

Admission Policies For Traditional BSN Nursing Students

DEADLINE Date for Applications for early decision for the FALL 2012 Term will be Wednesday, February 1, 2012.

The School of Nursing currently admits students in the fall semester only. Students must be admitted to the university prior to admission to the Helene Fuld School of Nursing [HFSON]. We currently utilize the Test of Essential Academic Skills [T.E.A.S.] version 5 [V] as our entrance examination. You must score 70% or higher on the READING; MATHEMATICS; & ENGLISH and LANGUAGE USAGE portions of the TEAS V to pass. The TEAS V is required of all Traditional BSN applicants for the FALL 2012 Term. To be considered for admission you must have at least a minimum cumulative grade point average (cGPA) of 2.5 and all applicants that meet the minimum requirements are invited to take the T.E.A.S., which is administered by the HFSON Office of Student Affairs & Retention [S.T.A.R.].

Program of Study: Fall 2012

Please Note: THERE HAVE BEEN CHANGES TO THE NURSING PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS EFFECTIVE FALL 2012.

NEW INFORMATION

Traditional BSN

Our program beginning Fall 2012 will be pre-requisite based. This means that WE WILL NO LONGER ADMIT STUDENTS INTO THE PROGRAM ON THE FRESHMEN or SOPHOMORE LEVELS of the Traditional BSN Program [please click onto and review courses in the “Program of Study: Fall 2012” link above]. ALL LEVEL I and II Courses on the TRADITIONAL BSN PROGRAM OF STUDY FOR FALL 2012 and beyond must be completed by the end of the spring semester of the year you wish to enter the nursing program. So, in order to be eligible to enter the Nursing Program for the fall 2012 semester, you must have been admitted to CSU and you must have completed a Nursing Application by February 1, 2012. Also, ORIE 101 – Freshman Orientation [waived if transferring in with 25 or > credits]; ENGL 101 – English Comp I; ENGL 102 – English Comp II; MATH 110 – College Algebra; ART 105 – Intro. to Ceramic Sculpture or IDIS 102 – Music & Dance or IDIS 103 –Visual Arts & Theater or MUSC 201 – Survey of Jazz Music or DANC 226 – Fundamentals of Choreography or THEA 211 – Fundamentals of Acting or Any Foreign Language course; BIOL 107 – Comprehensive Preview of Life Sciences [not required if you transfer in BIOL 201]; BIOL 201 – Human Anatomy & Physiology I; BIOL 203 – Human Anatomy & Physiology II; CHEM 103 – Chemistry for Health Sciences; BIOL 308 - Microbiology; HIST 1 and HIST 2 [out of World History or U.S. History or African-American History]; SOCI 201 – Introduction to Sociology; PHIL 102 - Logic or PHIL 103 – Introduction to Philosophy; PSYC 201 – General Psychology; SPCH 105 – Speech Communication or SPCH 202 – Principles of Interviewing or SPCH 204 – Critical Listening; MATH 203 – Basic Statistics; PSYC 335 – Developmental Psychology; WLIT 207 – World Literature or an ENGL 200+ ; and NURS 213 – Normal/Applied Nutrition [or if transferring in you may use a Basic Nutrition course] must all be completed with a grade of “C” or better by the end of the spring 2012 semester. These courses can all be taken at CSU or at a different institution and transferred in to Coppin State University. You must have a minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA and you must pass the TEAS V to be considered for admission.

NOTE: We admit by highest cumulative GPA first. Due to the fact that CSU HFSON will be running no less than four iterations of the BSN program in fall 2012, the number of new admits for fall 2012 that we will be able to accommodate will be greatly reduced. This means that it will be more competitive than ever before to become a Coppin Nursing Student.

While completing your pre-requisites, you will be advised by STAR Office personnel each semester. An “Academic Hold” will be placed on your account each semester for advisement. Early registration appointments are in November for Winter and Spring Semesters and April for Summer and Fall semesters. The exact time frame for your early registration time may be found on your EagleLINKS Student Center in the Enrollment Dates Box on the right side of your screen at the end of October and March respectively.

Please Note: Most of you applying for fall 2012 were looking at being here 3 years from fall 2012 because under the last program of study, students who were admitted started the program at the sophomore level (Level II). The change to a pre-requisite based program would not change that for you unless you had everything on the program of study, other than the NURS courses, done. You would still be here 3 years from fall 2012, but you would start NURS courses in fall 2013 and be in NURS courses for 2 years from then. So, nothing has changed for most of you as it relates to how long you will be here.

Now if you have all the pre-requisites listed previously in this message, pass the TEAS V and have a high enough GPA, in that case, you could be done in 2 years from fall 2012.

IF YOU WILL NOT HAVE ALL THE PRE-REQUISITES BY THE END OF SPRING 2012, THEN THERE IS NO NEED TO TAKE THE TEAS V AT THIS TIME AS YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO BE ADMITTED FOR FALL 2012. ALSO, IF YOUR GPA IS BETWEEN 2.50-2.90, SINCE WE ADMIT BY HIGHEST GPA FIRST, YOU MAY WANT TO APPLY AFTER YOU HAVE EITHER RAISED YOUR GPA TO 3.00+ OR YOU HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED THAT NUMBER OF STUDENTS WE CAN ADMIT HAS INCREASED SINCE OUR ADMIT NUMBER FOR FALL 2012 HAS BEEN GREATLY REDUCED.

The School of Nursing admits applicants without regard to race, religion, national origin, age, or gender.

Note: Applicants are advised that if they have a criminal history, they may be delayed or not granted licensure as a professional registered nurse by the state board of nursing.
