Master of Education degree in Rehabilitation Counseling Program

The Graduate Program in Rehabilitation Counseling is designed for:

• Training specialized professional personnel in vocational rehabilitation who are able to provide high quality vocational rehabilitation counseling and independent living services to individuals with disabilities, especially individuals with significant disabilities;
• Developing rehabilitation counselors who are trained to address the multidimensional needs of clients from diverse cultural backgrounds;
• Meeting personnel needs for vocational rehabilitation personnel in the State-Federal Program, community rehabilitation programs, and other rehabilitation agencies and organizations;
• Providing opportunities for national certification, state licensure, and for rehabilitation and human services personnel to upgrade skills;
• Meeting professional academic training needs of individuals under the Comprehensive System of Personnel Development according to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as Amended, and;
• Preparing vocational rehabilitation counselors to work in varied rehabilitation settings.

The program is fully accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education, Inc. (CORE).

A student desiring to work toward the Master of Education degree in Rehabilitation Counseling should first confer with one of the faculty advisors of the program. This step should be taken immediately after admission to the program.

Graduation Requirements

A minimum of 49 credit hours of graduate work, which usually takes 2 ½ academic years of study or its equivalent, is required for completing the program. The requirements include course work in three areas of study: academic studies, clinical work, and internship experiences. A Research Option, either Option I or II, must be selected by the student for program completion.

Internship/Clinical Requirements

The field work/internship component is an integral part of the program and is, hence, mandatory for all students. The practicum component of the program consists of one credit. To earn one credit in the practicum course, a minimum of 100 clock hours of supervised clinical experience in a rehabilitation agency/facility is required. The internship component consists of three courses for a total of nine credits. To earn three credits in each of the three internship courses, a minimum of 200 clock hours is required in each internship.
