Middle States Accreditation

Dear Coppin Family:

I am pleased to report that at its session on June 26, 2008, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education acted to reaffirm accreditation of the University. The Commission also requested a progress letter, due April 1, 2010, documenting (1) steps taken to strengthen shared governance (Standard 4), (2) implementation and assessment of a comprehensive enrollment management plan (Standard 8), and (3) implementation of a documented, organized, and sustained process for the assessment of general education, outcomes, including direct evidence of student learning (Standard 14). The Periodic Review Report is due June 1, 2013.

This is an important milestone and achievement for Coppin State University. I extend sincere thanks and appreciation to those who spent countless hours and efforts in preparing the self-study document for submission, including the Co-chairs of the Self-Study Steering Committee, Provost Sadie Gregory and Dr. Scott Dantley, the members of the Steering Committee and Subcommittees, and all others who provided important information, input and data for inclusion in the Self Study Report.

The University greatly appreciates the thoughtful, detailed and hard work of the Commission, as well as the Chair and members of the Self-Study Review Team. Their dedication to excellence is acknowledged and most appreciated. While we are pleased to receive the notice of reaffirmation of accreditation by the Commission, we must also be mindful of the important work that lies ahead of us as we work together to address on-going issues of the University, including but not limited to the actions outlined by the Commission. We must continue the important work ahead of us to sustain and advance this institution on all fronts, using the self-study document and feedback from the Commission as important blueprints.

Sincerely,

Reginald S. Avery
President, Coppin State University
