The OIT Telecommunications department provides, maintains and manages the infrastructure necessary for the support of internal and external electronic college communications. These communications include telephone, computer network and other critical services. The infrastructure consists of fiber optic network backbone cabling, copper network station cabling, and all copper telephone cabling.
A primary function of this department is to provide college wide telephone voice services using a new Nortel Meridian PBX. Telephone services are provided at a level necessary to support the demanding administrative and academic needs of the college. Both conventional and voice over IP technologies are used to deliver telephone services. Telephone and voice mail services are also provided to all resident students.
The Telecommunications department also provides Call Pilot, a unified messaging system, to all administrative and academic users. This system integrates the voice mail with e-mail and allows the individual users to manage their voice mail along with their e-mail.
Telephone call accounting is the responsibility of this department. To control abuse and provide departments with telephone usage information, reports are generated from the monthly call records.
This department provides technical support for special projects such as smart classrooms, new building construction, etc.
