Student-led Efforts
Baltimore area college students and supporters gathered in front of Coppin’s New Dining and Meeting Hall in honor of Haiti on January 21 from 7-10 p.m. Steppers from local Black Greek Letter organizations performed in a Block Show that broadcasted live on 92Q radio. Members of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Incorporated—the organization that initiated the event—passed around an orange American Red Cross Bucket for donations. All proceeds from the Block Show went directly to the American Red Cross for the Haiti Relief Fund. Earlier in the week, the Iotas held two similar step shows at the inner harbor’s Pier Six Pavilion. The group stepped for 16 minutes and raised $140 for Haiti. The group plans to continue humanitarian efforts, and make Haitian Relief their semester initiative. “After the disaster in Haiti, I wanted to bring people together,” said Darrell Pittman of Coppin’s Office of Student Activities, who helped plan the Block Show. “I felt that it would be best to bring this program to Coppin and let the community know that we are here and we care. We alreay know that a lot of our Haitian brothers and sisters are deprived so I think it’s important that we do all we can to help build up the country.” “I don’t have a connection to anyone in Haiti, but it’s just something that I felt should be done,” said Wendell Wiggins, II, initiator of the event.
Coppin’s Delta Sigma Theta Sorority proclaimed Monday, January 25, 2010 ‘Help Haiti Awareness Day.’ The sorority sisters engaged in informational activities about the devastating earthquake and accepted monetary donations on behalf of the American Red Cross.
